I was telling my pdoc about my sleeping difficulties. He said that even if I can't fall asleep that if I rest it can be as good as sleep. At the time I didn't say anything because I was too tired! But don't you need to go through the various stages of sleep to feel rested?

Maxie read article and read it as that rest is as important as sleep in the sense that if tired after sleeping rest is good for you and don't feel you should always be on the go. But I don't feel he meant don't sleep just rest also when tired? Phillipa

I think it might work if you miss a night or two's sleep, but I doubt it's a long-term solution. I've barely slept well in two years. It completely alters your psyche.
Have you ever tried Lyrica? It's supposed to deepen sleep. Neurontin helped me, but was too sedating during the day.

I've read of people sleeping really really well on Lyrica.
You need deep sleep. Rest helps some temporarily, but it is no where near a replacement for quality deep sleep.

When I can't sleep, wanting to sleep more is just more frustrating. So, if I change my focus to feeling as releaxed and comfortable as possible this often helps.
If you're trained in meditation, you can probably achieve very similar states to sleep willingly even if sleep won't come willingly.

Out of frustration, I actually ended up buying a CD called Brain Sync "Deep Sleep", which supposedly mimics the brain waves produced during deep sleep.
I don't know how hokey it is, and how much of my success I can put down to taking Niacin before bed (based on Linkadge's recommendation), but either way, I'm able to fall asleep around 11pm or midnight for the first time in over a year (as opposed to 3am).
The only problem is that my sleep is still really fitful and unrefreshing, so I still feel like trash the next day

Don't trust anything you read in the Daily Mail.

Hey gggunit.
I have temporarily suspended my niacin intake. It can definately improve my sleep, but I stopped taking it every day due to some dysphoria the next day. It almost seems like a mood stabilizer to me (like epival), however, it seemed to have some depressant action.
I'm definately keeping it in the toolbox but just not taking it everyday.

>Actually I don't trust much, even from med journals. In this information age it is hard to wade through all the info and figure out what is good and what is bad. Sigh.

The British papers specialise in inaccuracy and sensationalism. The Daily Mail specialises in being 'shocked' all the time (must be tiring). Our magazines specialise in Katie Price/Jordan, Kerry Katona and Z-list celebs.
