ABC Nightline Prime: Secrets of the mind

Posted by morgan miller on August 26, 2010, at 22:12:55

If you have the time, energy, and a computer, check out tonight's episode of ABC's Nightline Prime Sectrets of the Mind(don't think it will be available online till tomorrow). The last segment sheds some light on what one scientist believes is THE reason why he did not turn out to be a psychopath. It is the same reason why I believe the majority, and maybe all of us, have suffered from mental illness much more than we should have. I bet you can guess what this reason is : )

That sounds really interesting, thanks for the heads up!

Is this the series with Morgan Freeman? I watched 2 of them (but forget the name), and they were very provocative and interesting.

Are you talking about "Looking through the Wormhole" on the Discovery Channel? It's not that one, but yes it is interesting. I think you will be able to just watch the last segment that I speak of. Most of the episode deals with the brain and how activity in the brain can be detected in brain scans showing what may cause some people to behave the way they do. Towards the end, a neuroscientist talks about what he believes prevented him from developing a psychopathic personality. It is something I often emphasize here and I think you also strongly believe in.

It's love. He said he believes that having a very loving, nurturing and stable upbringing is the reason why he did not develop into a psychopath despite his brain imaging results showing very little activity in the frontal lobe, a common characteristic in psychopaths/sociopaths. He had an unusual high amount of criminals and murderers in his family history. He believes he inherited the genetic predisposition that contributed to the deviant behaviors of his ancestors.

You emphasize love here? Heh, that must be in between repeatedly refering to me as a bitter and angry person.

There's many people all around us who are bitter/angry, but it's hidden by their emotional masks!

Linkage, this response again gives me and I am sure others reason to draw certain conclusions about you. I'm pretty sure I apologized for what I said and I admit that it is just too difficult to get a true feel for what emotions and thoughts someone really has through text on the internet. Does this mean nothing to you? Again, your apparent inability let things go after someone admits they may be making a mistake leads me to continue to be inclined to draw the same conclusion. If you don't want me to think certain things about you, then don't reinforce my admittedly premature conclusions about you with responses like these.

I never said anything about me being loving and nurturing did I??? But, if you spoke to the people that do know me, they would tell you that I am very gentle, loving and caring. I am all about love. I think there is a major deficit of love for ourselves and love for others in this world. Now, this does not mean that through my being very passionate and having some anger of my own, I still don't make mistakes and react to things in ways that show my own shortcomings. I get frustrated at times and I speak my mind. I'm still working on growing and maturing so that I can better communicate thoughts to others in a less threatening, attacking, or critical way.

Love is not judgemental. Why bother drawing conclusions? Who does it benefit?

I already told you, I am not perfect and sometimes I rush to judgment and speak my mind. Again, sorry if I have prematurely drawn conclusions and judged you wrongly. We are communicating through internet text and have no way of knowing truly what someone's thoughts, feelings, personality, or character are. I am pretty sure I said you "sound" like you are somewhat bitter or angry. Maybe I didn't, I'll have to go back and look. I did not just straight up come out and say you are a stubborn, angry and bitter person. I we all might benefit from not taking certain comments some of us make too personally and through trying to better understand the reason for the comments made. Linkage, letting go is a much healthier way to deal with things. I know you know this already.

Revised response..I made some serious typing errors in the first one.
