i have severe depression 30 minutes after masturbation, not in those 30 minutes after masturbation,
that means i am unable to function, socialize, the depression is so bad, and after 3-4 hours i get better...
those are symptoms
i dont know what to do, should i go on lithium
i already have heartburn from seroquel XR, will lithium worsen it?
every time i think of Sertindole i see a doom scenario of me falling death...
that aint normal, but yet i fantasis about the ability to cure me mentally...im hopeless

So if you don't masturbate, do you feel OK? I don't see why this would lead you to start lithium, Jeroen.
Take care.

It sounds like guilt/shame issues. Sex can get intertwined with other emotions in all kinds of ways....it can also happen to people who grow up with certain religious beliefs that deem sex to be 'bad'.
It sounds really frustrating and uncomfortable-but certainly not a hopeless situation! You could try reading about machosism (from a psychological perspective-not porn perspective) and see if that helps you understand why this happens.

I was thinking the same thing about the guilt. It might be that you think masturbating is bad for religious reasons. Also not masturbating isn't easy if you don't have someone to do it with. Its like a damn and you have to relieve the pressure.

Jeroen,
I experience something similar (a worsening of depressive symptoms following masturbation), but for me the worsening of symptoms starts immediately after I ejaculate and lasts for roughly 24 hours. I've taken lithium in the past, and it didn't make this problem any better. Not too surprisingly, I didn't have this problem at all when I was in remission on Nardil.
A lot of people say that masturbation is harmless, but I haven't personally found that to be true. It can and does make my depression worse. And I don't think that this is a guilt/shame issue because 1) I don't typically feel guilty immediately after I masturbate, and 2) I didn't have the problem of feeling more depressed after masturbation when I was on Nardil. That's just me, though.
I don't really know how to advise you on this issue other than to echo those who've said that masturbating as little as possible would probably be a good thing. I don't think that lithium will make the problem go away. Perhaps an antidepressant would help you as it did with me, but there are no guarantees there either.

Look into the Chinese Medicine concept of "Jing" or Essence and its relation to sex and health. I'm willing to bet you also sweat easily, suffer insomnia and/or anxiety and feel thirsty and hot for no good reason. Just a guess.
In short, depending on your constitution you will eventually deplete your energy with excessive sexual activity. You may then feel fatigue, anxiety, depression, or just kind of "blah", like running on empty. Some people don't notice it and some people definitely do. Again, it depends on your constitution and state of health. Also, psyche drugs mess with your kidneys and may exacerbate imbalances in your physiology.
Getting enough rest, eating well, avoiding stimulants and other drugs and taking herbs can help you to replenish your reserves, but overall you would want to reduce the frequency of ejaculation a bit.
Good luck.

What if you go to sleep right afterwards? If you can fall asleep right after you might be able to get some relief. Just so you know norepinephrine levels increase orgasm. Afterward norepinephrine levels drop in men. This is one of the things that helps you lose an erection. Perhaps its related to that. No one can really say.

Joroen and Thomatheus,
Are you masturbating compulsively? If so, you may want to look into sexual compulsion/addiction. Many people who suffer from sexual compulsion/addiction experience a decrease in energy and even depression after masturbating. I'm not saying that this is your issue. It might be worth a look though...

Only once daily can be a pattern. It doesn't mean it's abnormal or problematic. It just sounds like masturbation is a problem for you because it makes you drained and depressed for a while after you masturbate.
As others have said here there may be some hormonal issue going on here, or neurotransmitter issue, or even some psychological issue going on here. I don't know enough about your story or your background to be able to help you figure it out.
Do you have a psychotherapist/counselor that you trust with whom you can speak about masturbation?

Conundrum,
You could be right that the worsening of my depressive symptoms following masturbation could be related to a drop in norepinephrine levels. That might explain why I didn't feel depressed after masturbating when I was taking Nardil. Then again, Wellbutrin is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and didn't stop me from feeling depressed after masturbating, so I don't know. As you said, I don't think that anyone can really say for sure what the cause(s) of this problem is/are.
Sleeping right after I finish masturbating doesn't really make the problem of feeling more depressed after masturbating any better. I guess it does in the sense that I don't have to be conscious during part of the period of time when I'd be feeling the most depressed, but I still feel more depressed than usual for the remainder of the 24-hour period following masturbation, if that makes any sense.

Simcha,
I would say that for me, masturbation is addictive in the sense that I'd prefer not to be doing it at all (because it worsens my depressive symptoms) but still do it. However, I wouldn't say that I masturbate more than most males do. These days, I do it about once every 3-4 days. There have been times when I've done it a little bit more and times when I've done it a little bit less, but doing it less often doesn't prevent me from feeling more depressed than usual afterwords. So, I wouldn't say that I masturbate excessively, but you could be right that there's a compulsive/addictive aspect to it.

Tomatheus,
Addiction/compulsion isn't necessarily about frequency of masturbation. As you alluded to below it is more about the relationship you have to masturbation and what you experience when you masturbate.
I wonder if you have had some sexual trauma in your life. Sometimes there is no clear-cut reason to these things.
I hope you find relief somewhere.

Its debatable whether wellbutrin's mechanism of action is really from reuptake inhibition.
from wikipedia's entry on bupropion
"The occupancy of dopamine transporter (DAT) by bupropion and its metabolites in the human brain as measured by positron emission tomography was 622% in an independent study[124] and 1235% according to GlaxoSmithKline researchers.[125] Based on analogy with serotonin reuptake inhibitors, higher than 50% inhibition of DAT would be needed for the dopamine reuptake mechanism to be a major mechanism of the drug's action. By contrast, approximately 65% occupancy or greater of DAT is required to achieve euphoria and reach abuse potential.[126]"Originally wellbutrin probably did have some efficacy as a reuptake inhibitor when people were dosed between 600-900mgs but the seizure threshold was lowered to much.
Wellbutrin's mechanism of action probably has something to do with its NDRI properties but it also from its effects on nitric oxide and nicotine receptors.
Nardil would definitely increase dopamine and norepinephrine more than wellbutrin and keep it around longer afterwards.

There is a cure for that. Don't masturbate. (being humorous)
What happens during sex? Well, a lot of dopamine is released.
If your dopamine stores are low, then sex uses them all up and you are left depressed until they start to rebuild. The opioid system is involved too. Adrenaline is used up. Prolactin hormone shoots up.
If those hypothetical assumptions are true, then anything that is anti-dopamine anti-noradrenaline is going to be bad for you.
You know how I am always looking for clues? Remember amantadine? That was a strong clue. Totally ignored, too bad, but still a strong clue. Well, this sex thing is also a strong clue.
The whole antipsychotic thing may indeed be all wrong. Well if we look at your history, we know for sure it is all wrong. It is so commonly assumed that if someone has psychosis symptoms that it can only be an antipsychotic that fixes it....totally false totally wrong.Since you are under the care of others you probably can't do this, but I wish you could somehow get your hands on a single capsule of DLPA 500mg, divide it into 8 equal piles of powder (about 60mg) and do one a day. That would tell a lot.
Remember how Seroquel worked and then pooped out? Well, at the dose you were taking, it was doing a lot of stimulating norepinephrine and dopamine...and maybe the poopout was when your dopamine/norepinephrine factories just couldn't keep up with the fast pace anymore and ran out. And are still run down unable to get back where they were.
And I wish you would try Amantadine again.
Anyway.
This is the end of the thread.
