Does Wellbutrin/Zyban cause withdrawals?

Posted by weatherfreak on August 24, 2010, at 9:18:52

Hi everyone, I might be starting Zyban/Wellbutrin next week after I see my pdoc and I want to know about withdrawals because I suffer from terrible withdrawals from SSRI/SNRI's and TCA's

I don't get withdrawals from Ritalin, Modafinil and Opiates at all.

I get mild withdrawals from some benzos, but terrible from xanax.

So is Zyban withdrawal like SSRI/SNRI? Thanks guys, tell me your stories.

My other option is adding Lithium to Tolvon (mianserin) and I don't want to go there at all. I don't know why but Lithium scares me.

Weatherfreak,

I personally experienced no withdrawal symptoms after I stopped bupropion SR "cold turkey." I did, however, notice that my depressive symptoms started to get worse, as did the agitation that I was experiencing from the lithium that I was taking, about a month after I discontinued the bupropion. Given the fact that it took about a month for these things to happen, I think it makes sense to conclude that they were not withdrawal symptoms, but a return of more severe symptoms and the amplification of a certain side effect of lithium's once the bupropion fully wore off.

Keep in mind that what I've written is just one person's experience. I wouldn't be too surprised if others here end up reporting having experienced withdrawal symptoms from stopping bupropion too quickly. I also stopped Paxil (paroxetine) "cold turkey" and experienced no withdrawal symptoms, so my experience with bupropion may not be representative of the general population of individuals who've taken bupropion.

Thanks Tomatheus, that's exactly the kind of responses I'm looking for. The good, bad and ugly.

Serotonin and drugs that change it are not my friends. I lasted 3 days on Paroxetine before I ripped the kitchen apart.

I'm a very placid person by nature.

I can't answer your question since I have not been on wellbutrin but...its interesting, I get nasty withdrawls from SSRIs and SNRIs but not ritalin either.

Funny, the drugs that are supposed to be habbit forming for me aren't and vice versa.

Interesting as years ago was on miltown with valium and stopped it cold turkey felt nothing. Paxil at l0mg after two years of use took two weeks to just take tiny bites of before off. Also one week of wellbutrin and I had to get off as I acted to me manic? Phillipa strange how different people react to meds.

That is interesting, isn't it. I was on ritalin for months and I did eventually go on a binge after about 8 months. I don't need it everyday either. Somedays I could pop 2.5mg to get by, somedays I needed 20-30mg, somedays none. Then in the span of 10 days I went through a pack of 100, slept like a baby every night, ran out and had to wait for weeks for my next script to be dispensed. I was totally fine, mind you I'd never do that again purely because of that days I actually needed it I had none.

If I ever ran out of efexor, luvox or zoloft. I'd be a screaming mess after 2 days, brain zaps, the works, etc... for 2 to 4 weeks!

This is exactly why I'd like to know if anyone out there knows exactly why I'm asking this question because I'll think long and hard about taking it.

Thanks Linkadge.

I had no withdrawal effects from wellbutrin, but then I never had withdrawal effects from the various SSRIs and SNRIs I tried. Getting off opiates was the only time I experience withdrawal effects (and cigarettes of course)

Really? It seems the only med that has me so to speak is luvox at the lowest dose 50mg strange isn't it? Phillipa
