I was wondering. In recent years, lithium has become quite in demand in the industrial world. How does this, or will this affect the psychiatric supply of lithium?

There's some concern over having enough for batteries

The article didn't mention any problems w/ the psychiatric drug supply, but who knows? Maybe prices will go up? Maybe docs will just use depakote and/or the atypicals more?

The techno-sector can just bugger off if they think they will displace the psychiatric community onto depakote.
It simply does not work as well for many people, not to mention the 20 fold elevated suicide risk when people come off it.
I think we need to prioritize.

Could do, but it's still relatively inexpensive at the moment.

I know many patients take lithium simply because its the one that works and they can afford it.
There are many bipolars who do well on lithium who simply would not be able to afford higher priced alternatives, or higher priced lithium. They'd probably just stop taking it and commit suicide.

Definitely, lithium is very cheap compared with drugs like Zyprexa and Abilify. It's the blood tests which cost the money.
The prices paid by the UK National Health Service for lithium products are as follows:
Priadel 200mg tablets, £2.30 for 100 tablets
Priadel 400mg tablets, £3.35 for 100 tablets
Camcolit 250mg tabs, £3.09 for 100 tablets
Camcolit 400mg tabs, £4.13 for 100 tabletsCompare this with Zyprexa and there's a big difference!

Blood tests in Canada are free. When I got to a theraputic level (when I was on it) we only did blood tests once every 4-6 months or so.

Blood tests are free here too. What I meant is that they still have to be paid for by the Health Service, and so they increase the overall cost of lithium treatment.
