L-amphetamine!! One of the metabolites of selegiline. I knew about this prior to starting emsam on Sunday but I wanted to give emsam a chance... well today is day 4 and I'm remembering back to my Adderall days (about half a year) how much I hate the l-amp. I've also been on Dexedrine and Vyvanse so I can clearly discriminate the l-amp from the MAOI-B effect.
Doc and I are trying Emsam first because I also have ADHD (in addition to social anxiety and chronic atypical dysthymia -- part of my bipolar), and as emsam is more selective for MAO-B it would be stronger on dopamine than the other MAOIs.But I guess not, Parnate is next. Well he's gotta call me back but we agreed it would be next if emsam doesn't work.. I hope he doesn't make me try it out any longer. I can't see myself being content in the long-term with levoamphetamine in my system...
Gah sucks because the MAO-B inhibition is really nice so far! Helping with ANHEDONIA!!
So those of you who are thinking about emsam. If you've ever taken adderall and dexedrine you should consider your preference. If you like dexedrine but hate adderall you probably won't like Emsam..Experiences? Opinions? Suggestions?

Emsam doesn't convert to amphetamine since it isn't metabolized in the GI tract. It is stimulating, but you will get used to that in a few days. It can be a big help for anergic or atypical depressives.

Not true. The metabolism to l-amphetamine takes places in the liver actually. The difference with emsam as opposed to oral selegiline is that the patch, by bypassing first-pass metabolism, leads to the creation of LESS amphetamine metabolites. But regardless of route of administration, the drugs eventually go through the liver to be metabolized.
I got off the patch after day 4 and switched to Parnate because I can't agree that I would get used to the l-amp. I was on adderall for about half a year and the l-amp didn't let up too much for me. I actually find l-amphetamine to be sedating.. while at the same time making me feel cracked out. Tired and cracked out. I hate it lol.
But you're definitely right that it would be great for anergic/atypical depressives.. just not me. Vyvanse and dexedrine (pure d-amp) were so much better for me.. I just wouldn't be satisfied with emsam in the long run for this reason.
This is the end of the thread.
