I have just been put on an anti convulsant called Tegretol or Carbamazepine. Different forums have mentioned that this medication can be used for Bipolar disorder but that it is not as effective as other medications. I don't want to take something that has been known to not be very effective. I do realize that we all respond to medication differently but I am still curious if any of you have tried this med for bipolar treatment?

Thank you for the welcome. Yes, I am Bipolar supposedly type II but I think I have more of a rapid cycling behavior. Are you?

I am a little surprised that your doc didn't start you off with the "newer", "improved", less side effects of tegretol, which is trileptal. It may not have as much as a track record, but is showing just as effective, minus the blood issues that may arise.

I did find the tegretol xr quite similar to trileptal, minus the trileptal not causing me severe sun sensitivity. And like most, or all meds, hate them:)

Psychiatrists sometimes use 'Tegretol Retard' around here (yes, I know, a dumb brand name, what were they thinking?)

Tegretol and trileptal were not the same for me.
Trileptal had similar antianxiety effects but it did not have the antidepressant effect that I got from tegretol.Linkadge
