lamictal response in 3 days?

Posted by KaylaBear on December 18, 2009, at 14:05:53

Hi, I just started lamictal a few days ago and its already working. I know 200 mg is the most common dose but am wondering if anyone has ever stopped at 25 mg? I have had some soft bipolar symptoms, mostly anergenic (sp?) and concentration issues and don't like any of the ssri side effects plus they seem to make me depressed.

Im not sure if this is some kind of placebo response or what but I feel so much better after only 25 mg for 3 days. The first day on it made me feel awful but the second and third day-so far so good. Not sure if I am being overly optimistic or what here.

I know it will be up to my doc whether to go up to 50 mg or not but just wanted to check with you all to see if anyone else stopped at such a low dose or had such a quick response since it seems too good to be true (and we all know the saying -if it is too good to be true-it probably isn't).

cheers =D

If your reaction to Lamictal follows that of the majority, the early improvement you are experiencing will soon disappear. It will return at dosage increases, and hopefully remain stable once you reach a higher dosage.

Well then that explains everything. My doc did not tell me all that yet, and here I am thinking it would be great to only need 25 mg. ha! Looks like i will hvae to wait and see how it goes.

Thanks Scott!

Is that a property of all anticonvulsants, or is it specific to Lamictal?

Do they still have the starter kits that give you three days at 25mg and then 50mg for three days, and then l00mg? That's great you got a response at only 25mg. Will this be a solo med for you? Phillipa

It seems to be unique to Lamictal.

My depression is atypical unipolar, and I experienced a similar strong (and completely unexpected) AD effect at 12.5mg only an hour or so after the first dose. This strong response lessened over the following month. I'm still responding at 200mg after six months, but nothing like the first couple of weeks, unfortunately. It's keeping me functional, for which I'm grateful, but that's about all it's doing at this point. As always, your mileage may vary.

By the way, virtually all AD's now cause my depression to worsen. This was not the case earlier in my life, and it is quite inconvenient. It would be very helpful if there were additional mood stabilizers with clear-cut AD effects.
