Maxie, I think it's too difficult to od if that's what he might be worried about. Maybe he can prescribe enough for a few days at a time?

I've never taken Haldol before. It's not something I want to try due to TD.

My pdoc doesn't want to prescribe anything for me until he sees me. I got an appointment for Friday morning. I will be a babbling idiot by then if I don't get any sleep.

That's ok. I would take some thorazine but the pharmacy told me not to take it with the Parnate. Anyhow, I've been off the Thorazine for a while now. I miss. it.

So when I see my pdoc on Friday I am going to ask for Ativan. I really hate taking a benzo, but this lack of sleep is getting dangerous. So what is the usual dosage of Ativan for sleep? 1 mg? More?
Thanks in advance.

It varies just like all meds. Some need tiny doses I need large ones or did as when the luvox was at 250mg I needed 4-6mg of ativan. Off that I'd need much less as benzos now make me tired. Try since no sleep for so long lmg. Play with dose. That's only my opinion. Love Phillipa

Thanks for responding Phillipa. I just needed to know approx. what the dosage should be because I don't always trust my pdoc to put it high enough. God, I can't wait until Friday night when I can take it! That is if my pdoc will give it to me.

Ativan is a quick fix for sleep -- in time, months to years, you'll habituate, and I don't really recommend short term benzodiazepines for continuous use as they won't be around when you are in real need of anxiety help (this includes Xanax, which is even shorter acting).
There are benzodiazepines that are more suited for sleep, Restoril, Dalamane (very strong).
But not to be disparaging, from some of your postings in the past, and I won't bring up why, I would be very concerned if you were taking barbiturates.
Lack of sleep by itself is not dangerous. By this I am not saying that one should get out on the highway or drive a commercial vehicle without sleep. But sleep is self-correcting. It is not a pleasant experience to go through sleep deprivation, but at all costs avoid naps, or any stimulant, caffeine or otherwise. Its just a matter of when the clock can correct itself.
And your medication may be playing a fair role in this too.
Good sleep hygiene also includes not working on the computer, TV, stimulating activity before bedtime. I know, a lot of us get into this habit, I could speak myself.
Getting enrolled into a sleep study if your insurance can possibly provide for it would be very revealing.Sleep and depression (and other psychiatric disorders) have their links. There can be other reasons.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that do, go get some short term relief, but ask your psychiatrist and/or your GP for a longer term referral to a sleep expert if possible.
Something like Lunesta 3mg would be a better choice, but if you want to use Ativan, probably 1mg at bedtime.

Thanks. To be honest I AM looking for a quick fix to sleep. I don't plan on taking Ativan for ever .. just to get me out of this cycle.
I took 2 mg as prescribed when I got home and it wasn't enough to make sleep .... just really out of and stoned. I guess I will try 4 mg tonight.

Maxime,
Could you add it with a longer acting sleep aid? I know (I think) that Lunesta is unavailable. Do you react favorably to ambien?

We don't have lunesta or ambien available in Canada. We have something similar to Lunesta called immovate but it never did anything for me. But in theory, I would be good to combine meds. I just don't know which ones. :(

Hi, have you used the Dalmane before? Would you recommend 15 mg or 30 mg? Thanks.

Yes, in the past years ago when I was fairly benzodiazepine-naive (that means I hadn't taken very many benzodiazepines and I didn't need stronger medications.)
I think I took (flurazepam) up to 30mg once and it scared the crap out of me -- not to put a damper on things... what I mean I guess is that it was VERY effective in pulling me under.
I would start with 15mg personally, but discuss with your doctor how much flurazepam he would be willing.

It took 6 mg of Ativan, but I did it. I still feel like sh*t, but my guess is that it will take a couple of good sleeps until I feel better. Right now I have a killer headache.

I'm glad to hear something worked. I was worried cuz not sleeping can be very dangerous. I'm sure the antidepressant effect will be stronger once you start to sleep more as well.

dont keep sticking 6mg off ativan down your neck , or you will soon be in trouble.the max a english gp will give is what i take 4mg a day.try to space them out through the day so you relax , its no use knocking yourself out with 6mg ,you just wake with a thumping headace like a hangover,If took to hospital with panick attack they only give you 2mg an send you home.add some herb valerian to your day its not great but it does help, not to much or the toilet needs to be handy.at night if you take ativan , dont take it as you go to bed.The 2mg i take is 3 hours before bed , chill with some tv or music an let it work slow. You take six an bam asleep for 2 hours ,wake up an crave more, better to be child than out your head, try an find a ad with a good anxierty record.
