Biophosphanates have been associated with that side effect... I can't say about litigation, tort suits have been around since time immortal...
Basically its a risk vs. benefit of those medications (Fosamax, Boniva, etc) and should be thoroughly discussed with your gynecologist / primary care provider before you make a decision to use one.
Common sense OTC agents for osteoporosis are supplements -- an increased amount of calcium (2000 mg / day) and phosphorus as well.
Due caution for calcium is noted though -- one shouldn't take more than about 500mg at a time if they are at risk for kidney stones. (Which basically means splitting the number of times you take calcium throughout the day).
The rest, you probably get from food.

Do me a favor seriously google the most positive statement about fosamax you can and let me know what you get. I agree about the calcium and 2:1 ratio with magnesium and l000mg of D a day. Love Phillipa

never taken fosamax, but i was involved in bone density research. one of the findings of my team (different study than the one i coordinated) was that fosamax + PTH produces no better results than PTH alone. and generally, PTH seemed to produce good results. don't know if this helps...

bottom line re: PTH: it is used in the treatment of osteoporosis and helps to rebuild lost bone density. the way it was given in our studies was as a subcutaneous injection; i'm not sure if there are other ways to take it. here is a link i found that seems to give more info than i have:

sorry i couldn't tell you a whole lot more,
