I am a college student on abilify and i have been having a problem for the last year with heat intolerance and sweating [caused by abilify]. I tried to switch to serdolect half a year ago, but then switched back to abilify because of weight gain.
Now i am considering switching to zeldox, since the side effects of abilify are a big disadvantage. Before i do that i want to share my latest thoughts on the cause of this problem.
My theory is that the heat intolerance is caused by a disruption of the 5-ht1a (serotonin 1a) receptor. Abilify is partial agonist of this receptor.
I found that serotonin 1a, 2a, and 2c affect temperature regulation. However it seems that all 2.gen. AP's affect 2a and 2c. Therefore i thought it might be 1a causing the heat intolerance in abilify.
If this is true then i was thinking maybe a 5-ht1a antagonist might help. The only one i could find was pindolol, and this drug doesn't seem too good either.
I am interested in hearing anyone else's thoughts on this subject.

Hello efishy,
I don't have any advice for your situation, but I wanted to welcome you to Psycho-Babble. There are a lot of really knowledgeable people on this board. I hope someone will give you some feedback.
Heat intolerance sounds like a pretty dangerous side effect though. I hope you find some way mitigate that side effect.

hi efishy,
I have no idea but its possible that some people neurotransmitters section of the site might be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the response. I think i'll post this in the neurotransmitter section, since it fits better. Great website by the way!

Hi, and welcome...
If it's just sweating you are worried about, that happens on many psychotropic drugs and I use a certain med for that.
I don't know how to deal with the heat intolerance per say but in the past I have added an anti-cholinergic agent which has worked well (since these drugs work for over-sweating anyway) and is pretty safe.
http://hyperhidrosis.org/medications.htmI use Pro-Banthine - my pdoc said it's safe to mix with psychotropic drugs (but obviously check with yours, first).......that's if its the sweating only that is bothering you.

Whatever the reason for it's side effects, Abilify is a crappy over-hyped antipsychotic being falsely advertised as an antidepressant. It S U C K S SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS! Well at least for many out there. I'm sure it is helpful for those that really need it.
If your on an antidepressant and you are still experiencing symptoms of depression, GO TO THE GYM, DO SOME YOGA, GO TO THERAPY, F*CK*NG DEAL WITH IT!!! Unless you are not functioning and you are chronicly depressed in a way that it is constantly affecting your life, you do NOT need Abilify.
This was not meant for the OP. Sorry for my little rant. If you are truly sick, go for it and try whatever it takes to make you better.

> DThe sweating is quite bothering in social activities, but i can control it somewhat. The problem is that when it's really hot outside - or really cold and i have to wear a big jacket - I overheat and feel like a radiator. Sometimes i feel hot all day.
I don't think medications that stop sweating are the cure, since that would actually increase my body temperature more.
On the other hand i choose not to take any drugs that cause weight gain since i like running and hate feeling that i am overweight for no reason.
I have survived now on a low dose of abilify for a long time - it doesn't seem like I need a really heavy AP. The pdoc doesn't seem to like Zeldox though, since it has to be taken with food twice a day and so on. I feel like switching nevertheless.

I found an interesting study on the subject [although in this case it is actually ziprasidone that causes hyperthermia]. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18606348
Here several causes are presented for temperature regulation issues. I don't know which one is the more likely cause.

I know its also listed for Seroquel.
It is probably common among certain atypicals.
It hasn't been reported with Geodon (Zeldox), but the same comments do apply also from the PI:
"Body Temperature Regulation - Although not reported with ziprasidone in premarketing trials,
disruption of the bodys ability to reduce core body temperature has been attributed to antipsychotic agents. Appropriate care is advised when prescribing ziprasidone for patients who will be experiencing conditions which may contribute to an elevation in core body temperature, e.g., exercising strenuously,
exposure to extreme heat, receiving concomitant medication with anticholinergic activity, or being
subject to dehydration"

I've had this problem with several drugs, esp. TCA's and AP's. an herbalist at the old elephant pharmacy here in berkeley (how i miss it) told me to try fresh ginger root--only fresh root, not dried in caps &c. I just swallow a slice about the size of a nickel or quarter every morning. Break it into about 4 bits and swallow it with water like pills. It may take a few weeks, but it totally cured my hot/sweating problem, which was so severe that i had stopped going out socially, because i would have B.O. and wet shirtsleeves from wiping my face before I even got to wherever I was going. Try it-- it's cheap and has no side effects.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try that and see if it works.
