2 Anti-psychotics?

Posted by SheilaC on July 10, 2009, at 7:00:37

Ok, I have read a lot on this board that people don't think you should take 2 anti-psychotics because of the harsh side effects.

Here is my problem. I have a bladder disorder and the antidepressants cause my bladder pain (I have IC). My bladder doc told me that the drugs that effect serotonin will usually bother IC patients's bladders. Since I have tried all of the SSRIs and SNRIs and a few of the old antidepressants my Pdoc has me on the following:

100mg Seroquel at night
1mg of Abilify during day
1mg of Klonopin as (taken as .5mg as needed)

The Seroquel really helps me sleep, with my anxiety and also with my depression.

He added small dose Abilify to help with the depression and keep me from being so sleepy during the day from the Seroquel.

Sometimes if I take 2mg of Abilify I experience some anxiety, hyperness (akatheisa?).

Will I really do myself harm by taking Seroquel and Abilify together?

I really need to compact depression and anxiety using non-traditional meds.

I have a more mild form of BP, but this disease effects my whole life and all of my relationships. If I am too hyper and anxious people think I am so "full of life and friendly" and if I get depressed I feel paralyzed by my anxiety.

Any suggestions?

If its safer to drop one of the anti-psychotics, I would be willing to do that, but I really need another med.

Are there other drugs I should looks at with my doc?

Abilify is a really good one, personaly id take that over seraquel, serquel seems to be ideal for sleep most it seems.

Abilify has a unique profile,at very low doses it actualy states its a dopamine modulater, meaning it balances dopamine from being to high or low,its a bit more technical then that but thats the jift, when u go higher in the dose it then takers on the anti psycotic effects,......many many people i know love the med.

I personaly hate seraqeul lol.

Hi,

There are no interactions between Abilify and Seroquel.

Best regards,

Its not necessarily the "harsh side effects", but
that two or more antipsychotics, while maybe not having a medication database drug-drug interaction, nonetheless enter uncharted territories with a mix of receptor antagonism/blockade that should be watched.

It is quite likely that you may be experiencing akathisia from Abilify -- its not always the D2/D2 push-me/pull-you panacea that it was touted to be... at least for me it was in the mid to mid-higher spectrum of that.

But I'm sensitive to APs and strong(er) ones usually produce akathisia.

As for serotonin... atypical APs affect their level. That's what makes them atypical, their 5HT(2):D2 ratio.

Nonetheless their effects on 5HT are different typically than SSRIs, they form a receptor blockade, such as what trazodone/nefazodone does in some regards, and Remeron partially.

Since you said you've been through old antidepressants I assume you mean tricyclics such as amitriptyline which have been in use for Interstitial Cystitis.

There are some other treatments too, antihistamines and more esoteric ones, but I'm sure you're aware of this having this condition.

But, if this combination works for you, so much the better. Its a pretty low dose of both medications and a modest dose of Klonopin.

Thanks Jay for the input. Yes, I do take antihistamines and they really help for my IC bladder problem. I have tried Elavil and some of the older ADs, but they actually cause me pain and urine retention (even at tiny doses). I love the SSRIs and SNRIs, but that direct hit on my serotonin causes me huge bladder pain.

So far I have upped my Abilify to 2mgs, and I will probably go up to 2.5mg. I'm not sure I can up it to 5mg.

But even so, like you said, I think these are still pretty low doses of anti-psych meds.

I asked my docs PA if it was bad for me to take both of these at the same time and she said no.
