NARDIL, new user..please help!!

Posted by michael marozik on May 4, 2009, at 4:12:17

okay well i have a resistant 'agitated depression' and
no antidepressant has worked so far......

i am currently taking:
3mg xanax xr
1800mg neurontin
60mg inderal
45mg nardil (just started)

my doctor gave me 45mg nardil cause the 6mg EMSAM patch was wayyyy too expensive and didnt seem to help much besides make me more agitated..

okayyy soooo i have 3 questions....How long should nardil usually take to work with peoples experiences on here????, i took 6mg EMSAM for 10 days then switched to nardil yesterday, Would that in theory make the nardil work any faster???? .and also Has anyone 'these days' had nardil work for them????

and also i dont want negative feedback on how nardil doesnt work now...i just want "happy" and positive feedback if possible!!!

thanks a million if you reply

help me out, i am so desparate for relief!:[

Hi Michael,
Is your "agitated depression" diagnosed as bipolar? Do you swing from being very down to being angry at everything and lashing out at everybody? I know a person like this and she is diagnosed as "agitated bipolar".

Anyway, if you tend towards some mania, be careful when Nardil first kicks in. It can cause some hypomania in people that are not bipolar. I suspect it can also precipitate a manic episode in a bipolar person.

I doubt if your 6mg of EMSAM is going to help shorten the time Nardil takes to work. I am surprised your doctor didn't have you wash out the EMSAM for at least a few days before starting Nardil. For me, I had to get my dosage up to between 75 and 90mg to get the 90% MAO inhibition required to treat my depression. After this target dose was achieved, Nardil would generally work within a month-for me.

Be positive. For many people Nardil is the only medication that works. I was on it for over 10 years. Some people have been taking the medication for over 20 years.

When Nardil does work, it can be like flipping a switch. One day nothing, then the next day-relief! It can be an amazing medication for many treatment resistant people, that have tried everything else. I have personally been on 45+ different antidepressants and augmenter combinations. Nothing worked for me like Nardil.

In my opinion, Nardil is still the Gold standard for the treatment of atypical depression and social anxiety. Nardil + clonazepam is an amazing combination for the treatment of social anxiety.

With your agitated states, you may need to augment with a mood stabilizer. Maybe someone else out there knows more about that.
Be Well,
Jedi

well i would say i always feel this inner tension, and throughout the day i feel very tense and depressed, and every so often i reach my boiling point and lash out. but its very steady and constant, its not like im super depressed and tired, then all of a sudden agitated and wired..its a mixture of the 2 all the time

yes he gave me neurontin as a mood stabilizer and ive been on it for 3 weeks, if anything i think its making me feel worse, in my own opinion.

im also thinking about asking for valium instead of the xanax xr, because i seem to build up tolerance quickly and now have a tolerance for klonopin, ativan, and now xanax..i wonder if thats a good idea to switch to some benzo ive never tried to see if it'll be effective for awhile?

but yeah ive heard all these good reports on nardil, but on the contrary also... ive heard all these bad reports on that nardil got changed on '03 and sucks now..but that doesnt make any since...it still has to work good if it still has the same maoi active ingredient, idk what to think, but im like at the last straw and cant take this pain much longer..

Hi again Michael,
Valium is about 20 times as potent as Xanax. It also has a much longer half life than Xanax. I'm not sure how much the extented release formula for Xanax would increase its apparent half life. You will have some cross tolerance built up between the various benzos.

IMHO, if the shade of orange color in Nardil had not changed in 2003, no one would have known the difference (except for the publicity). I was off of Nardil for other trials in '03, but when I had to go back, it worked as always for me.

Nardil is the "Bomb". If nothing else works, give it a good trial.
Good Luck,
Jedi

I have just about had enough of my pathetic life and after 25+ or 30+ meds I feel Nardil is next in line to try along with clonazepam that has worked best for me out all the ''pams''.

extreme atypical depression, and social anxiety here.

hELLO EVERYBODY . I,m also a new nardil user . I had low greade depression and serious anxiety . That coupled with a meltdown in my financial situation -economy etc. has brought me to try this medicine .
Been working well yet I still drink alcohol which definitely destroys the effect of the nardil. Has anybody else had this problem with alcohol creeping up on a really good therapy with nardil. Seems to counteract for days after I drink only 8 beers .
Good luck to all and appreciate any response . only the patient knows best .
Thanks

Hi,
When I used to drink heavy the resulting depressing was excruciating. I don't think it lasted for days, but alcohol is a depressant and will make many peoples' depression worse.

Funny, while taking Nardil, the effects of alcohol don't seem to be profound. I don't push it but four or five beers has very little affect on me when taking Nardil. Just my experience.

I've tried Pregabalin to 450mg (supposed to be superior to neurontin). I found it quite effective in the first week for Generalized SAD and Depression - almost like a mood stabilizer - but it certainly wore off and was/is very expensive.

I found Lexapro to be the best - KILLS Depression entirely - lessens Anxiety but not to the same degree as it 'cured' my Depression; Doesn't solve SAD but then what does?

Even better is Moclobemide with Dexamphetamine (Great and has a pro-social effect also) and add in 2.5 to 5mg Lexapro to cover Depression - Is a safe and very effective combination.

As for Nardil I've tried it at 90mg for a few years - my experience and conclusion is below - I hope it helps...

I found that Alcohol with Nardil could make me feel very confident, competent, assertive and VERY social (dis-inhibited) - the perfect state which is otherwise never experienced by someone who is strongly affected by 'Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder/SAD') - and perfect for when in social environments).

(Note: nothing else I have tried has ever been able to approach or replicate this state except for maybe Dexamphetamine...and I've tried Nardil, Parnate, Moclobemide, Clonazepam, Xanax, Lexapro, Prozac, Paxil, Amitriptyline, Clomipramine, Remeron, Buspirone, Bupropion, Reboxetine, Ritalin, Dexamphetamine etc (I only try prescribed medication and not street drugs etc)

For me, I found the Nardil only really useful when I combined it with alcohol (this I would only do when out on the town - without alcohol I found Nardil almost redundant bar the early stages/days - a rather hit and miss affair thereafter).

There were days in the early stages where I could be quite talkative or pro-social but again this desired affect was not predictable and so not reliable.

With alcohol I found it had a very pro-social effect on me (felt like complete remission - alcohol alone would hardly ever have the same effect on me - note I only drink when out with friends - again I rarely drink otherwise).

Aside from the Nardil-Alcohol combination (i.e. during the day/work etc) I find Nardil rather inconsistant in the early stages/ first few months, before it eventually starts to fade in its effectiveness (aside from the afore-menioned combination).

I find that Nardil can cause rebound anxiety which can at times equate to Paranoia when anxiety levels are heightened (I have experienced this on more than a few occassions - this is VERY problematic and counter-productive - for example if experienced at work etc).

I never experienced any problems with diet (even when having Soya Sauce), however, I did experience weight gain. It also caused loss of Libido and complete ED...only survivable by adding Viagra which makes for a great experience although it can be a mission to come but again this is not the worst.

Would I recommend Nardil for Generalized SAD - not really - paranoia is a Bitch! It can work but is unpredictable and unreliable while also coming with a host of unwanted side-effects.

Good Luck!
