I've been having a lot of trouble sleeping even with Lunesta, so my pdoc gave me Restoril. I haven't heard a lot about this med. Anyone have experiences you want to share?

I liked Restoril when I used it for a short period of time. It is important to differentiate between the initiation of sleep and the maintenance of sleep. If you are having trouble falling asleep initially, Restoril might not help you. However, if you do fall asleep initially, Restoril can provide you with a good night's sleep and a feeling of being refreshed in the morning. There doesn't seem to be much of a hangover effect in the morning. I like Ativan, too. It can help one with both aspects of insomnia.

RaisinB, Interesting, what Scott said. Restoril didn't help me fall asleep. But sometimes staying asleep is the main issue. Wish I'd known that before tossing the stuff.

I've been using it for about a decade. Modest tolerance developed long ago, but I've used a stable dose since then. It both assists me in getting to sleep, and in staying asleep. I wake clear-headed, i.e. no hangover.

Well, I took one the other night and it didn't seem to do anything to put me to sleep. So then I took a Lunesta and did fall asleep. And stayed asleep for about ten hours, and had a hard time getting up. But I didn't really experience a hangover. Just fatigue and yawning for the rest of the day. So it worked in that sense.
I haven't tried it again. I am wondering if I need it if my main problem is falling asleep, because it didn't seem to induce that. When the Lunesta works, it keeps me asleep for 7-8 hours.
On the other hand, I've been experiencing so much stress lately that I have a couple drinks and a Xanax at night too. My pdoc did not like the sound of that, and that's why she gave me the Restoril.
Right now I'm sleeping fine, but I am going to have to experiment a little more to figure out what I need and what I don't. The drinking definitely complicates things. I have just gotten in the habit of taking something, then if that doesn't work take something else, if that doesn't work start drinking, etc, until I put myself out. I always sleep, but I don't have one reliable thing that does it, as far as I can tell. I agree with my pdoc that removing the alcohol piece is important, but it always seems to be a necessary ingredient.

worked great, when needed. One thing, it's not the best for anxiety at night, but is good for sleeplessness, calms the mind.

Have you tried Dalmane? It's an old drug and give you a bad taste in the mouth---but works longer than Restoril. I've always heard that Seconal is the bomb----but lot's of folks never wake up. I'd say Scott's the man to go to.

Wow, that raises shades of Anne Sexton! Is Dalmane still even available?
