Geodon a weight gainer?

Posted by Enigma on April 27, 2009, at 14:58:31

I recently gained 40 pounds on Seroquel (and dropped the drug like a bad habbit) and am on a strict diet now using Topamax (which I'm used successfully in the past) to take the weight off. Unfortunately, I'm having a hell of a time losing any weight at all, now. The pounds just won't come off no matter how little I eat or what I eat (no carbs, etc).

I'm on Geodon, 80mg. The doctor and I are wondering if this drug is the culprit. I'm also on Nardil, 75 mg which I've been on for ages, but I remember losing weight on it before. I've never really gained weight on Nardil before like some people have.

I'm trying to exercise, but it's near impossible for a depressed guy with no energy each day, although I think the treadmill is making a difference, if I could just get on the darn thing.

Any ideas? I'm on a slimfast diet now, I'm male, and I'm currently all gut weight. Target is 160-165 pounds, and I'm 197 now. I only lost about 7 pounds in 1-2 months!.. Horrible. I'd like to lose 7 pounds every week to 2 weeks. I've done it before! (with no Geodon)

Any ideas, over the counter stuff that really helps, etc? Seems I gotta get my metabolism back to what it used to be, but that will be tough as I'm 40 now.
Should I take a break from Geodon and see what happens? It's hard to lower the dose of it as they are capsules, not tablets.

TIA!

I don't know what's wrong with me but I have failed to gain weight on 45mgs of remeron and 300mgs of seroquel. I am in pretty lousy shape right now after 6 months in bed with depression but I have been back on the treadmill regularly. Once you get in the habit (habit formation takes 21 days of consecutive practive according to cognative psychologists,) it makes a difference in your mood and your metabolism. The other thing which I have so far failed to get back in the habit of is weight lifting. Muscle is the only fiber in the body that burns calories at rest. The more muscle mass you have, the highter your resting metabolic rate. If you can drag yourself to a gym and get a simple, comprehensive program set up, you will see a big difference in your body. And I find it very meditative since you count reps, breath out with the exertion, inhale as you return to the start position... I could go on.
I' m not sure about Geodon, but there is little doubt that Seroquel causes type 2 diabeties. I think there is good reason to suspect the Geodon. Check out www.askapatient.com. Leans to the negative but some useful info.
Good luck.

Thanks for the responses people.

I do want to get back into lifting again, even after all these years. Problem is, some drug I'm taking, is making me a zombie. I'm tired all day long. It doesn't happen every day but most days it does. I can even take naps and gain nothing from them. I wake up just as tired as I did before the nap.

I feel weak and exhausted most of the time. I blame Nardil for that. The early days of Nardil, I would just crash on the floor of my computer room, I couldn't even make it to my bedroom. Then I would get up a few hours later only a little less tired. Then there was the ridiculous insomnia and constant wakeups at night. Now, after a year or two on Nardil (off/on), I still get tired on it, but I can make it to the bedroom for a nap, but it's a useless nap. The insomnia got a little better (recently) and this Valarian root has me sleeping mostly through the night. I still get up in the morning at varying times purely exhausted. Not much of a life. I can't even get out there to mow the lawn. Sad.

Are you asking if I'm on Provigil? or wondering if I should try it. Been on it before for my fatigue but it didn't help. I had a thyroid test once and I think things came back normal except for one value and it wasn't that long ago. It might be time for a retest. We're doing liver function tests now as some values came back abnormal.

I can't lower my Nardil, hell, I'd like to go up on it. I'm depressed enough as it is each day. I was thinking of taking geodon every other day just to see what happens.

Great, I was awake when I got up, now here comes the fatigue. Oddly enough, after I took the Nardil. I may have to break up my Nardil dose.

I'd be curious to see what Bleauberry has to say about the Nardil. Maybe you should post a question to him about the dosages and side effects of Nardil.

I could do that. Problem with Nardil is that I went off it recently to try Remeron (stupid, I know), and after I was totally off of it, I cried 2-3 times a day for a week, then after that, I became suicidal and almost committed myself. I didn't realize I had become so sick without meds. Nardil is a life-saver for me, literally. Needless to say, I skipped the Remeron trial and went right back onto Nardil.

It get's me non-suicidal, but I still get depressed on it, like I am now.

Current topic of depression: lack of friends.

When working, I was surrounded by "fake" friends, which was fine, they acted real enough.
When the company let me go due to my disorder, all the fake friends went bye-bye too, no matter how hard I tried to keep them.
This has been a sore area with me for years. The company used to have parties, etc, and employees used to have cookouts/parties and so forth. Now I'm not invited to any of their reindeer games. It hurts a lot. You can't do that to a depressed guy. It just makes them worse. Not a single email "Hey, are you feeling better", "How are the new meds treating you", NOTHING.
