I am giving up! I have tried them all and none are working right now. I am irritable, depressed, and need help! I have been helped at one point or another in my life by SSRI's Wellbutrin, Stimulants, Sleeping aids, Benzos, and Lamictal. The rest haven't done much. Atypicals made me feel out of control; most of the mood stabilizers were useless and/or had side effects I just could not deal with. Please someone- give me some advice- what worked for you when you were down and out- I feel ready to give up and am so irritable it scares me. Currently taking a stimulant, sleep med, and benzo..... Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Are you (by any chance) a student doing research on this site? If not, then ignore that question.
"I have been helped at one point or another in my life by SSRI's Wellbutrin, Stimulants, Sleeping aids, Benzos, and Lamictal. The rest haven't done much."
What did you mean by "the rest"? What else did you try?

I am not a student (just a very frustrated patient who has given up on trying to feel better). The meds I have tried in the past include: lithium, tegretol, depakote, topamax, neurontin, dilantin, gabitril, lamictal, verapamil, clonidine, prozac, paxil, zoloft, luvox, trazadone, serzone (back when it was around), wellbutrin, effexor, adderall, ritalin, vyvanse, dexedrine, librium, valium, meprobomate, parnate, abilify, geodon, zyprexa, risperdal, nortripyline, lunesta, ambien, atenolol, and even hydrocodone. I am sure this list isn't complete as it's been a long haul.... Lataly, NOTHING helps! I am irritable, angry, and very depressed. Suicidal at times but wouldn't act on it as I am a parent. I am desparately seeking something that will work- just to slightly alleviate the irritability or make me even feel flat again (the rages are unbearable). Thanks for your responses....

There is a way that seems natural and a great many go that way. And there is another way that those that are desparately seeking can find, even the few.

> LouFM,
A way has been revealed to me that could open a new life where you could sing a new song. You could have a new heart and a new spirit and a new mind, not like the one that you describe here, but one of peace and joy.
It has been revealed to me that there is a great gulf separating two worlds, one side the world of death and another side the world of life and peace. And it has been revealed to me that one can break on through to the other side.

May I suggest a total workup by a psychiatrist and intensive work with a good therapist.
You mentioned, first post, that some meds have helped. Who gave you all of these meds? If they helped you, why aren't you on them now?I have a concern in regards to how MANY meds you've been on. How old are you? How long did you take each med before quitting it?

Could you list some criteria that one could use to determine if someone could know if a therapist is a good therapist?

Frustratedmama,
I hope you get some advice and help with your issues. Sorry I don't know about those meds, but others who frequent here do. That list of meds is pretty intense.
"Suicidal at times but wouldn't act on it as I am a parent."
Aren't our children little life-savers? I have had that same thought before. All you have to do is picture a horrified look on your child's face--and it suddently becomes unchallenging to choose life!
"I am desparately seeking something that will work- just to slightly alleviate the irritability or make me even feel flat again (the rages are unbearable)."
I know very little about rage; I do know that you can remain hopeful that out there is somehow, someway, or someone that will help you through your painful times.
"I am irritable, angry, and very depressed."
What are you taking now?

Lou, I believe that picking a therapist is an individual choice. That is all I have to say about it.

I am seeing a psychiatrist (actually have seen 4 over the last 15 years- 2 out of state before I moved and 2 in state- only 1 was really "bad" in my opinion). I have also been in therapy for 17 years- sometimes intensive therapy and sometimes outpatient and less intensive. The reason for the extensive list is due to trying to find a medication that would work and maintain its effectiveness. The SSRI's "pooped out" quickly and other medications never really lived up to expectations or had such horrible side effects it wasn't an option (I can't tolerate zyprexa, abilify, geodon, etc). Anyway, I am currently taking vyvanse, librium, and lunesta..... and seeing a therapist, a doctor, and a psychiatrist.... All medications were prescribed by a psychiatrist who is trying to help me feel better and is open to options that may help. I guess that is why I turned here- to check with others (to see if anyone else has been in my shoes- and found something that worked).

hey, a few things:
lots of nutrients help, when given with an antidepressent to improve response. generally, foods that don't come from a factory, but in particular getting enough folate and b12, magnesium and zinc, and vitamin d3, and fish oil.
have you been checked for other health issues, like sleep apnea, thyroid, hormone levels (& various birth controls), etc.
also, have you tried ECT?

I have tried some natural vitamins, minerals, supplements, including St Johns WOrt, fish oil, Viamin b complex, 5HT, and cutting out comlex carbs.... ECT has not been tried yet though. I also saw a naturopath who had me on a few things (not sure what they were but I put drops on my tongue). I have also done chiropractic, massage, and seen an osteopath.

I just wanted to say thank you to phillipa, garnet, and desolationrower for responding and taking me seriously. My life is in complete shambles right now and it helps to know someone is listening! I am currently taking vyvanse for ADHD which helps a lot to maintain my job and taking librium to help with anxiety (I wish it were longer lasting though) and lunesta to sleep. Unfortunatley, I don't have 24 hour protection from the rage, and the depression is ever so present still. I have been tested for lupus, RA, MS, Lyme disease, thyroid, sleep apnea, etc, with all negative results (which is good but send us back to unknown psychological reasons with little releif from meds). The atypicals made me feel very weird (like I was tripping). I am just so desparate for releif- this has been going on for almost a year now without any repreive- longest bout of anger, irritability, and depression I have had without some sort of relief....

I could imagine that Vyvanse+Librium might cause irritability to be worse, even as it might help you in other ways.
You are obviously not well.
In your place, I'd be looking for a good doctor who could look at my overall health and advise me on strategies to improve it.
There's unlikely to be a magic bullet.

Seriously you have been through the mill so to speak. One thing that strongly stands out is the rage. Anyone ever suggested bipolar to you? Could be the wrong combo of meds together? Lithium, wellbutrin, a different benzo, And you have a diagnoisis of add or ad/hd? Love Phillipa just thinking

Bipolar has been mentioned as a diagnosis- however, I think my current doctor thinks it's adhd, anxiety, and depression. I have never been Happy with increased energy- just angry with energy.... I am looking for a new doctor but live in a state where resources are limited. My current doctor doesn't have much faith in my ability to respond to medication I am afraid. I would love to improve my life but honestly when you are feeling this horrible all the fun is gone and getting to the gym or any other activities is impossible.
This is the end of the thread.
