my pdoc. was a no go on stims, even provigal, not only that she was a no go on any drug, besides the 3mgs of clonazepam I take a day, which doesn't seem to be helpful, but when I stop them I notice anxiety immediatly. I was just wondering,
if I went to my regular doctor to get maybe a low dose of ritalin, or low dose of lyrica, or any other suggestions, would this be alowed?

Yes, its allowed. However, your GP may prefer to have your pdoc prescribe psych drugs, or may prefer not to prescribe them. When i first saw my GP and asked about something for ADD, she said i would need to get a neuropsychiatric testing done before she would prescribe a stimulant. In general i don't think suggesting a 'low dose' will make a doctor more likely to prescribe - they will want to make the dosing decision, and will want to make it an adequate amount if they give you the drug at all.
What do you and your pdoc disagree about (i mean in terms of diagnosis etc.) maybe you need a new pdoc instead.

You may have reasons not to, and that's fine. You don't have to and I didn't say you did at all.
As for GPs prescribing psychiatric drugs, especially strong C-II stimulants, I say a no go. They don't have the years of residency and CE credits and patients seen to properly recognize bad side effects in psychiatric medication.
The only place I would say that this has to be the case is in a really small town, where unfortunately psychiatric and psychologic services are virtually nonexistant and you have only the town doctor(s).

Guess it depends on the GP and if he feels he knows enought about psych meds know mine doesn't feel comfortable and refers to pdocs. Just my experience. Love Phillipa

I think stimulants are actually ones GPs prescribe along with antidepressants a bit since when kids stop going to their paediatrician they go to the GP and keep getting the ritalin they've been on?

yeah, pretty unlikely. psychiatrists are scared of moais, most GP aren't going to touch them. MAOI and a stim has to be titrated carefully. thats probably why your pdoc didn't want to prescribe a stimulant. and why getting meds from multiple doctors is not a good idea, since the dose to start on a stimulant with an MAOI is much lower.

Combining Nardil with stimulants should only be done under the care of an expert psychopharmacologist. This is not GP territory, IMHO.

it really depends on your doctor. i haven't had any trouble getting bp meds from my family doc. everything from SSRI's to mood stabilizers. we have horrible free/low cost psych care here & i don't have insurance. since my family doc has cheap office visits & actually listens to me (unlike a lot of pdocs), i have decided to stick with her.
