zyprexa question

Posted by Ricker on November 12, 2008, at 17:01:28

Calling all zyprexa users, I started taking 5mg. two nights ago. Myp/doc said take at night as it is a bit sedating. Sure, no problem, everyone likes sleep.

First night, took at 9:00, had to take some clonazepam at 1:00 to sleep.
Last night, took at 8:00. counting sheep at 2:00 so took more clonazepam.

Has anyone "not" found zyprexa to be sedating, as in sleep aid?

When I was on remeron, 15 or 30mg, I would take it 2 hours before bed and usually sleeping within 30 minutes.

I asked my p/doc for seroquel so I "would" sleep, he said I would be okay with the zxprexa?

On a side note, I am beginning to notice an improvement...already!

Thanks, Rick

I was on Zyprexa for a short period. It helped my anxiety, but it didn't make me tired. I was expecting to feel sedated, but I didn't.

Hi Rick,

What is zyprexa? what class of drugs? Do you take an MAOI with it or are they contraindicated? Btw-if it has a feel good component to it, may be better choice that seroquel!

Thanks,

~Jade

Hi Jade,

Zyprexa is an A/P, same class as seroquel. First time I've tried an A/P and it seems to be settling everything down. Depression is lifting and I'm much calmer. My mind is not racing..... very smooth drug.
Big concern is the weight gain and possible diabetes from the extra weight.

I'm in pretty good shape, usually eat healthy and try and get on my elliptical trainer 5 nights a week. So far so good.

Take care, Rick

Hi Ricker great explaination and so glad you're feeling better. Personally I tried in hospital setting seroquel with benzos and didn't sleep either. Maybe we're the Bobbsie Twins. Bet you're too young to remember them. Love Phillipa

You need a higher dose. 10mg! At five mg I don't sleep well. I take 15 mg now and sleep 10 hours a night.

My p/doc said try 5mg for 7-10 days and increase to 10mg if I'm still bouncing up and down. This is day 3 and I have already noticed a change in my overall mood. Things seem to be much calmer, not in a sedating way, just better?

I'm not sure if I should increase to 10mg just for the sleep as it may hinder my current benefit?

I think I'll wait another week and see how things go. What do you think Zyprexa? Does 10mg make a big difference for you as far as your mood, or do you just take the higher dose for sleep?

I've also heard that the weight gain is not dose related in that 5mg will cause no more, or less gain as would taking 10mg? True or false?

Thanks, Rick

me.
i take my zyprexa at 5:00/5:30 with dinner (so i don't forget). and i still have to take 1mg xanax hour before bed time.

a few years ago when my "mania" was really high i was on 10mg zyprexa, 2mg xanax AND 20mg Ambien to get to sleep...

i think it does depend on the person, cuz i've heard a few here say that they felt like they got stuck with an elephant dart when taking even 5 zyprexa...some are only on 2.5mg zyprexa.

**************
so assuming you respond as i have to the drug i wouldn't count on it for sleep aid. i think it might chill you a bit but won't MAKE you sleepy.

and yes zyprexa rocks for me.
best wishes

the first two times i was on it i didn't gain any weight, but i was drinking tons of water. i think that really made the difference.
everytime you think you're hungry reach for a tall glass of water first.

DON"T go up too quickly, once i did and ended up with a swollen tongue (SE) had to go back down and slowly titrate up (7.5 then 10).
10 was more sedating but as mentioned before only for the first week maybe. after that it wasn't useful for sleep for me.
Definately higher zyprexa helped with WOrse depression for me. i have more of a psychotic depression and zyprexa works really quickly.

Hey Rick,

That's great!! Glad you found something to stop "mind race". I'm sure that was scary. Hey, If I could be well, and all I had to do was watch my weight, no prob. Easier said than done I'm sure. Keep us posted on how it works for depression, OK?

Good Luck~Jade

I take 15mg now, and yes it deffinitly makes a difference in my mood. If I take 10 now I get irretable and angry. I was taking 10 mg with great benifit for the last 10 years. Since my 6 month trial on abilify, I've needed the higher doses of zyprexa to get my mood and everything else under control. I wish I never took abilify.

Yes I also take the higher dose for sleep. On 15mg now I sleep 9 hours. The abilify took away my sleep too. I would sleep 8-10 hours, depending on work or weekend, when I was on the 10mg dose.

False. and True. When I was on 10mg I gained a lot of weight. Then I went down to 5mg and didn't gain. Now I'm on 15mg and sustaining my weight. I lost some weight on 5 mg. My problem before the zyprexa was underweight and losing. So zyprexa was a good choise.

One realy good thing about zyprexa is the mood affect and psychosis reduction. I'm schitzo-affective. Which is half bi-polar and half schitzo. Or bi-polar with psychotic features.

Thanks everyone for your replies. (nm)
