I have been taking Nardil for (2) months and Abilify for the past (2) weeks. I have been on a weight loss program and have not been able to lose any weight in the past (2) weeks. I have cut my caloric intake in half and have been walking (2) miles per day. This may not seem like alot to some, but I weigh 310 and have not been active much in the past. I am so frustrated, because in the past I have been able to lose and average of (15) pounds in a month doing the same things I am currently attempting. Has anyone had trouble losing weight w/ Nardil or Abilify? I have heard that Nardil can cause weight gain, but did not expect this much resistance. Does it affect the thyroid or slow down the metabolism? I have only been having trouble since I reached the 75 mg dosage of Nardil, which seems therapeutic for me. Prior to reaching my current dosage, I was able to lose some weight. Any thoughts?

Afaik, neither of those medicines affect metabolism per se, although nardil especially may be effecting appetite. Both have very broad effects though. Perhaps keeping a food journal of everything you eat might help you notice how they are affecting you. Cutting food intake in half is quite drastic. Best luck.

Seems from other posters that nardil does tend to cause weight gain. Phillipa

My wife could not lose any weight while taking zoloft until she added 20 mcg of t3 into her regimin and than she began losing two pounds per week. Maybe take a thyroid test and see where your t3 levels are. If your doc says their normal see where you are in the range. Low normal while normal may be too low for you.

From what I read nardil is notorious for weight gain. Personally I wouldn't mess with my thyroid. But that's me I am not into experimenting with meds without docs orders and a medical condition to warrant it. So please get a full thyroid panel as the thyroid loop is very complicated. Phillipa

I told her to get her thyroid tested. Who else would do that but a doc! I also said not to accept low normal as okay since many docs are not up on thyroid. Meds like nardil can mess with your thyroid. If she can't lose weight and she's cut her calories in half she has to do something as weight is a health hazzard!! Many p-docs also routinely add 10 - 20 mcg t3 without any ill effect.

Mteformin is very dangerous unless you have diabetes!

Thank you all for your help and advice. I will ask the doctor to check out my thyroid for any problems. Conicidentally, I am on 2000 mg of Glucophage per day for my diabetes. So, maybe that will help in the future. Thanks, again.

for 1 month doing excersice and eating naturally but I couldŽnt.
Then I stopped Nardil only for 10 days and I lost all that wegith gained in only that time.
Now Im taking care of my eating and I haven`t gained again weigth.
This is my particular experience

Just thought that it may be helpful to others to post an update. I ended up going off of Abilify due to side effects that started showing up after taking the drug a while. I ended up gaining about 6 pounds in 12 days on Abilify. After I stopped, I dropped the six pounds in the following 4 days. Abilify definitely causes weight gain for some people. I hope that this is not the case for everyone.
This is the end of the thread.
