I posted back in September about a bad cough and took cough syrup without thinking about the MOAI connection. Made me sick!!!!!
My allergies have become progressively worse. Last week I finally crashed and had to go to a doc. I had been on Allegra and Flonase (nasal spray) and it was not doing any good. The doc put me on another antihistamine and nasal spray. I got a little better but not much--now added antiobiotic (sinuses got infected) and prednisone. I am taking little bits of codeine (cut up Tylenol #3) for the cough since I cannot take the codeine cough syrup. I need some kind of decongestant. Can anybody suggest anything at all to do. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired!!!
I love the Emsam and don't want to go off it.

Could you try a mucolytic, i don't know it might be one in your nasal spray.

Perhaps Mucinex (guaifenisen) would help with the congestion. NOT Mucinex D which contains both pseudoephedrine and gauifenisen. NOT Mucinex DM which contains both dextromethorphan and guaifenisin. Just plain Mucinex :)

Saline washes are a great idea. NeilMed makes a good sinus rinse kit available at CVS, Walgreens, and RiteAid. Or you can go with the traditional neti pot.

Hi,
I take EMSAM and also flonase. I have not had a full-out cold yet since starting EMSAM but I have had a stuffy nose. What I do (at night) is dab a bit of Vick's Vapo-rub around my nostrils. then i sit up super high on my pillows so I'm almost sitting up in bed to sleep. This seems to help. I also use the breathe right nose strips.
I don't know what I would do for coughing and I'm worried about that when the time comes. I think those saline washes are supposed to help clear out post nasal drip.
By the way did your doc prescribe you an emergency pill if you have a reaction or did he/she just say meet you at the hospital?

My pdoc told me to just lay down for an hour and it would probably pass.

No when I was on it. No sides except insomnia but was only on four weeks. Maybe not enough time.

Thanks for all the responses. I am back on-line after being off for a few days so will respond to everybody's post at once.
I have been doing a nasal flush about 3X/day. It definitely helps clear the stuff out.
The internist said to get the Mucinex. I know from past experience it is wonderful. However, it is an expectorant---thins the secretions so they can be coughed up. I got it, but the pharmacist said it would not help. But, if it thins out the junk in the lungs, why wouldn't do the same for the sinuses??? I have a cousin that is a doc and I will call him tomorrow and ask his opinion.
I got one of the Vicks inhaler thingys this evening. I have never been able to see that they helped, but at least it smells good (LOL)
I am finally getting better. We were out of town for a couple of days and the infection, etc. was better, but we were at a high altitude (8000 ft) and I really had trouble breathing. Last night I did not cough at all. We got home about 2 PM today and I have already started coughing again (8:40 now). Tomorrow we are leaving again and I will stay gone for a few days and see if it helps.I am really tired of it all. I was looking forward to a good night's sleep without coughing!
This is the end of the thread.
