lithium

I just found out my 8 year old son has bi-polar disorder, and lithium is probably what he'll be put on. I am really scared and sad. Can anyone offer advice or experience for me. We have been living in hell for 5 years not knowing what was wrong with him. It has pretty much destroyed our family. I would love to talk with someone. Thank you.

I didn't know they could diagnose bipolar in an eight years old thought it was defiant behavior? Or add? Love Phillipa

No phamacologist here but I would consider paramount the potentially irreversable effects of lithium on the kidneys, thyroid and brain of a still developing child.

Welcome to Babble!

You might want to check out the website www.bpkids.org. They have some good info on the disorder etc.

Just remember that now that you have a name for the problem you can really start to attack it. It can be scarey and overwhelming at times, but really there is hope. Good luck to you and your child in your journey.

Best,
EE

My younger brother has bipolar. He takes lithium and it seems to help him. It's a tough, tough disorder, but I think you will have some relief if your son can find a mood stabilizer that works for him - lithium seems to have relatively few side effects except it makes my brother a little more depressed when he starts taking it after having stopped taking it for a while - but the depression lifts once he's at a therapeutic dose.
