I've never asked Babble for advice on a client, maybe I'm not supposed to. But this one lady troubles me. I'm there to help her with her hoarding. It doesn't help that her partner is a hoarder also. She sees a psychologist and a psychiatrist. She has dissociative disorder with well developed alters though I've only seen one I think. Her pdoc prescribes:
Seroquel
Geodon
Alprazolam
Topomax
Wellbutrin
Abilify
Effexor
I know many here benefit from polypharmacy but something tells me that this lady is over medicated. She usually doses off when I visit her or call (I know, I'm boring). She is lethargic and has poor concentration. Maybe I haven't given enough info, particularly dosages, but I was still wondering if anyone had an opinion on this cocktail. I wanted to check here before I call the doctor.

I find the three antipsychotics very worrying, and I'd definately agree with your perception that she's over medicated. I'm not suprised she dozes off on that cocktail. Sometimes psychiatrists keep adding meds to augment a regimen, but fail to taper off drugs that were of little or no benefit. Sometimes I think the only reason people seem to improve on cocktails like this is because they're in a constant stupor and can't really think or feel properly any more.

OMG, I can't believe a Psychiatrist would put someone on such a combination of drugs with potential for serious interactions. This raises a red flag.

I don't see how anyone could be well on so many drugs; certainly I wouldn't be.
This is quite apart from whether their use is appropriate.

To cut this post short....BIG RED FLAG.
Just for starters, 3 antipsychotics at the same time? Oh my. I could really get revved up if I went down the list and spoke my mind. I won't. Let's just leave it at the 3 anitpsychotics thing. That's plenty all by itself.
Look, I don't know the psychiatrist, I don't know the patient, the history, the symptoms or anything. With that in mind, all of my instinct says, "that doctor is more insane than the patient".
I'm not sure there is anyone on the planet that could withstand that cocktail, or come anywhere near feeling well on it.
If nothing else, that is a downright dangerous stew begging for new and serious health problems.
3 antipsychotics? Geez. That just goes so much against the grain of established clinical psychiatry, not to mention common sense.

I think the shrink is just trying get this patient to shut the f*ck up. I mean, honestly, why else 3 antipsychotics? It looks like a brain-frying cocktail from Hell...is there anything you can do to get her to another shrink for a re-evaluation?

I'm trying but she's attached to the guy. She tells me that Seroquel lets her sleep which is a problem for her evidently. At this rate sleep may never be a problem again. BTW, shrinks don't take criticism well from social workers.

I'm just a kind of interested lay person and I can see lots that could be done to slim down her combo and improve her life...have you seen any of this shrink's other patients? Are they also drugged up to the max (and beyond)? Do you think they have some kind of f*cked up patient/shrink relationship, and he's using meds to express hostility or exert control?
