Nardil Problem? Hypomania or just feeling better

Posted by JohnSky on March 10, 2008, at 16:54:54

Hello.

I have been taking 60 mg of nardil for some time now and in the last few days I started to feel better. About a week ago I felt a little better and my suicidal thoughts slipped away. The problem is I feel alot of energy and seem to be racing some and talking fast at times. I am not in manic mode as I know what that is as that happened to me in the first time in my life at age 48 when I took Effexor... it caused it big time as set me way back. I not out buying things or taking on the world but do feel I'm running fast. I think it is part I am feeling better and just trying to catch up too fast on why I've missed by being severly depressed for the last two years. I am also on 2000mg of depakote so if mania is happening that should could contain the fire. I plan to talk to my doc tonight. Either way I need to just slow down... I am trying to do too much now that I feel better... but I am scared I might be in hypomania. Thoughts? Anyone have Nardil cause mania or hypomania in them. I took Nardil 25 years ago and never experienced this energy level... but I wasn't as depressed either for so long as this time.

Thanks

John

I think some degree of hypomania is to be expected when you've been on Nardil a while. You didn't say how long you've been on it. I've been on it for five days now and would highly welcome a spurt of hypomania.

You might want to consider lowering your dose.

I had a short spell of hypomania when I started Nardil. My energy exploded but it only lasted a short while and then things quieted down. Now I find myself sleepy in the afternoons. I really miss that energy.

Lots of people experience the Nardil euphoria. Talking to your pdoc is a good thing, especially if you are feeling really uncomfortable with what's happening. Mine was great while it lasted. However, when I did my increase to 60 I rapid cycled for about 5 hours and it was horrible. Thank goodness it only lasted a short while and a good dose of clonazapam settled me down enough to sleep (this happened at about 1 AM).

I hope things settle for you soon.

Hi John,
The first time I started Nardil about 11 years ago, I had a touch of hypomania/euphoria. This to will pass. Don't let your DOC talk you out of Nardil because of this side effect. It passes quickly. Be careful while going through it though. Try not to make any major life changes or risk a lot of money while in this hypomanic state.
Enjoy it while it lasts. When it goes away it is not poop out, and it will go away.
Be Well,
Jedi

When does this "feeling good" kick in? All I feel is tired, spacey, foggy brained.

I am on Nardil, 15 days, just went from 45mg to 60 mg yesterday . . .

Thanks

Nardil takes some time to work. You could feel better somewhere in the 5-8 week time frame. Others feel better sooner.

My feelings of hypomania have settled down... more so each day.

Thanks everyone for their input on this feeling as I was really scared there for awhile I was going into mania.

John

I am waiting for the "feel good" to kick in, too. I am on day seven of Nardil. I feel kind of spacy and brain fogged, too. I am not having as many crying jags though, so maybe it is beginning to work a little bit. I know the next poster said it could be 5-8 weeks. I don't think I can wait that long, so it better kick in sooner.

Are you having any other side effects? I am on 45 mg and not having any side effects much except for the brain fogginess and a little bit of constipation which I am treating by eating lots of raw vegetables.

I talk to my doctor tomorrow, hopefully and maybe he will kick me up to 60mg. I kind of hope so since it might make it work faster but it also scares me because then I might get bad side effects.

Marsha

It's tomorrow. I won't actually see him, just talk to him on the phone. Sometimes when I call, he doesn't call back til the next day. Ocasionally he doesn't return my call but I am quite sure that is due to the receptionist not getting my message to his desk. I know he will call me back if I can just get the uncaring, unknowing receptionist to let him know I need to talk with him. Maybe if I say it's urgent...

Anyone else having problems with this issue? I have only moved up from 45mg to 60mg for 4 weeks. When I moved from 30mg to 45mg I had this problem and it settled down and I was able to "complete"?
I suspect this as well.. as when I took Nardil 25 years ago I had no problem in this department.. but our bodies change.

John,
If you had no problem 25 years ago on Nardil you might get your testosterone level checked. If it is low or borderline low the Nardil will probably be enough to keep you from ejaculating. There are also several medications and herbs that can help.
Good Luck

Male sexual side effects associated with antidepressants: a descriptive clinical study of 32 patients.Hsu JH, Shen WW.
Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Saint Louis University School of Medicine, MO 63104, USA.

OBJECTIVE: This is a retrospective study to add to the existing body of clinical information regarding male sexual side effects associated with antidepressants. From the chart review, thirty-four out of eighty male patients were identified to have reported loss of libido, erectile difficulty, anorgasmia, and delayed ejaculation while receiving pharmacotherapy of selective serotonin reuptake blockers (fluoxetine, paroxetine, and sertraline); tricyclic antidepressants (nortriptyline, imipramine, amitriptyline, desipramine, and clomipramine); and a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (phenelzine). METHOD: The authors also discussed the management of these sexual side effects by waiting for spontaneous remission, reducing the dosage level, and substituting the offending drug with other antidepressants. RESULTS: This article underscores the underreported nature of antidepressant-associated sexual dysfunction, the high incidence of SSRI-associated sexual side effects, equal potentials in causing sexual side effects among the three SSRI's, the low incidence rate of sexual adverse effects from bupropion, and the minimal need to add an antidote if the side effects are to be managed systematically. CONCLUSIONS: Finally, male sexual side effects can occur randomly and involve any sexual phase randomly, and the treatment approaches are similar, regardless of the types of sexual dysfunction associated with antidepressants.
