I'm presently taking 75mg of effexor and after 2 weeks some of the depression has lifted but occaisionally I get really angry for no apparent reason which is not typical for me and then the depression is there. Am I taking too much, not enough effexor? Can anything be added to help with that.

Actually that is a fairly low dose. There is a thread on effexor that goes back many years you might try googling on the Dr. Bob side effexor. Good luck. Phillipa

Its the NRI component. I was a raging irritable jerk on 300mg of wellbutrin.
On that low of a dose of effexor it should just level off after a bit. I had to stop the wellbutrin because i was seriously screaming at people over asking me what time it was or other innocent questions.
This was years ago though.

So are you suggesting I stay at this dosage?

NRIs can cause some people to be more irritable, but that's not likely the case here. At 75mg, Effexor is only acting on serotonin -- the effect of the medication is dose dependent, which the NE action only kicking in at about 150mg.

Maybe cymbalta would be a better choice as it contains more norepenephine at a lower dose. At least that is my understanding. Of course could be wrong. Phillipa

My pdoc explained to me that Effexor always effects norepinephrine at a particular ratio. So, it's not as much at 75mg, but it still is there to a degree. A number of people on the board have brought this up as well.

Phillipa, I tried cymbalta and it did nothing for me except disturb my sleep. I'm at 75 mg effexor and maybe that's not enough to take away the depression. Does anyone know what it's like going from 75mg to 150mg. I'm scared to death to try it but this isn't working. When the norepenephine kicks in will it again affect my sleep? Lots of questions.

So are you saying the norepenephrine in cymbalta kept sleep away? Then maybe a higher dose of effexor could too. Taken any sleep meds or benzos? Phillipa

no sleeping meds or benzoides. a number of years ago i tried ambien and got about 2 hrs sleep i don't know if the newer stuff is better. with the cymbalta the sleep wasn't going to improve so i thougt why start a forever dose of sleeping pills.

I started at 75mg, my psychiatrist moved me up in incriminents of 37.5mg, it helped to transition my body to the increase gradually until i topped off at 150 mg. he increased it every 2 weeks. don't do it on your own, talk to your therapist and/or psychiatrist.
