I'd very much appreciate hearing people's experiences of drinking coffee or other sources of caffeine with Nardil. I'm not asking from a safety perspective (I know it's safe), I'm interested in hearing opinions on whether this is generally a good or bad idea.
Caffeine certainly lifts up my mood and can be particularly helpful in the mornings when I can sometimes be a bit down despite my 75mg/day of Nardil and is absolutely necessary if I have some evening committment when I would otherwise be passed out from Nardil fatigue.
Is there any chance that over time caffeine could be detrimental to the positive effects of Nardil or should I not worry about this.
Thanks!!!

I've not had any problems combining caffeine and MAOIs. I typically have the equivalent of three to four cups of coffee or cans of diet coke per day. This seems to keep me going, wards off headaches, and doesn't interfere with my sleep as long as I have the last by about six or seven in the evening.

Hi wowee,
You sound very similar to me. Until I get my two or three cups of coffee in the morning, I am generally in a depressed mood. I've talked to my MD about adding modafinil or methylphenidate, but so far no go. Caffeine is a fairly strong stimulant that I don't seem to develop a lot of tolerance to. It is addicting; if I go a day with no coffee, the next day I will have a splitting headache. And I never get headaches.I don't think you have to worry about caffeine being detrimental to the positive affects of Nardil. There are actually many studies showing a positive affect of caffeine.
Be well,

I have about 80ml of red bull before I go out at night - otherwise I would be fast asleep in the corner. I don't believe about it ruining nardil, I certainly think its essential if I want my day to be any longer than 9pm. i only have it once or twice a week though.

I spoke with my psychologist (not psychiatrist) yesterday on this topic. I didn't address with the him the possibility of a long-term detrimental effect of caffeine on Nardil (I'll deal with that if I have to), but rather the potential crash and/or jitteriness later in the day when I drink caffeine.
What I decided here was that it's very important for me to start the day in a good mood b/c my mood in the morning will likely carry through the day. I'd rather have coffee in the morning and get that uplift to the start of my day and deal with a bit of a crash later than start my day in a negative mood (as occasionally happens w/o coffee) and have that mood continue into my day.
Did that make any sense?
This is the end of the thread.
