Can someone explain when I person with bipolar should or should not take AD's.
What does one take when they have anxiety/depression if they are bipolar? Should they only take small doses?
What about sleep issues and bipolar. I read that a bipolar shouldn't take antihistamines? Why?
thank you

Some schools of thought think the SSRIs are bad for bipolars because they may induce mania.
My mother is bipolar, however, and has been on Paxil for a decade.
Her combo is Lamictal, Paxil and Xanax as needed. As it turns out my mom is much more tolerant of mania than she is depression.
She tried all the meds you indicated in her previous thread.
For sleep she takes temazepam. I don't know anything about bipolar disorder and antihistamines.

I'm bipolar type 2, but I usually just suffer from depression.
If you are bipolar type 1 you are usually just treated with a mood stabiliser like Lithium. For type 2 you usually take an anti-depressant (not everyone). SSRIs are notorious for making someone who is bipolar go manic. If you need to be on a anti-depressant the best ones are MAOIs (but not always).
As far as antihistamines, it's probably only the non-drowsy ones that you can't take because they could make you hyper.
I hope this helps a bit. I am sure others will respond with a better answer. :)
