which OTC drugs are o.k with Parnate/MAOI's?

Posted by nickguy on January 4, 2008, at 17:14:01

Well I've been on Parnate for a while and it's been great. I experience very little conflict with the diet.

It's pretty rare that I get sick, and I've never broken a bone in my body, but I went Skiing in Colorado over Christmas and experienced the first time I would have liked to been able to use some kind of decongestant or cold formula (going from sea level to one of the highest altitudes in the US!) . I made it by, but had some trouble sleeping. I'll ask my doctor next time I see him, (I felt no need because it wasn't serious illness) but thats not for a couple weeks and I was just wondering if anybody had links to reputable sites with information about over the counter drugs safe to use with MAOI's that I could keep for my records.

Thank you very much.

Hi Nick

You are like me in that I was able to eat almost anything with Parnate. I only had reactions to home made wine (store bought was okay).

I was travelling for work and had an awful cold. I bought Tylenol Cough and Cold tablets and that is when insanity set in. I started babbling sounds, words and making noises with my mouth. It was really scary.

There is a stimulant in cough/cold meds. The combination with the Parnate was awful. I wouldn't risk taking anything with a decongestant. Nose sprays are okay, but the meds are not (it will say on the packaging that it is not to be taken with MAOIs). I wouldn't try anything without asking a pharmacist.

I use the following sites to check interactions, I use both to cross-check.
