What Happened to Effexor Remeron Rocketfuel?

Posted by bleauberry on November 30, 2007, at 20:27:54

Years ago the Effexor + Remeron combination was called California Rocketfuel and was said to be a powerful combo for depression of all kinds including treatment resistant depression. I remember one person here many years ago who swore by it.

Anyway, I wonder why this combination is not more popular than it is. I hardly ever, actually never, hear of anyone on it or having tried it.

I would imagine that this combination could really raise blood pressure.

I'd do a Dr. Bob goggle search and see what you find out. Phillipa

The sheer stimulative effect of NE would raise pulse rates through the roof. Once both drugs are at a substantial dose, serotonin syndrome could occur since Remeron converts to a serotonergic agent.

Sounds like a recipe for the ER and intravenous clonidine and cyproheptadine.

No seriously folks, effexor plus remeron was a popular powerful combo in common use about 10 years ago. People that came here swore by it. They aren't here anymore, so I assume they are still well. In the people that did use this combo, no one ever had blood pressure problems or serotonin syndrome. The unique synergy of the two meds really was a good one. I just wonder how it kind of slipped out of the spotlight. Maybe other new drugs took the attention. Don't know.

Hello Bleuberry,

I have a new GP since 13 months.
He recommended Remeron + Effexor.

However, I decided not to touch Effexor.
This drug has bad side effects.
So I have been on a Remeron-Buspar combo for six months.

Now I am back on Elavil and Buspar.
I don't like Elavil, but I guess that I need the medicine.
I shall just have to live with it.

But I went to my GP to check my blood-pressure the other day.
Casually, I asked the doc about Effexor.
He told me that he has many patients that are helped by this drug.

So this GP has a strong belief that Remeron and Effexor is a good combo for depressed people.

I might try it myself some day,
X-ray

I was/am one of the "California Rocket Fuel" success stories. I am currently stable and depression is still in remission taking only Prozac and 5mg of Adderall in the morning and 0.5 sublingual Melatonin at night. The side-effects from the Effexor/Remeron/Adderall combo bother me long-term (issues with effexor timing withdrawal symptoms as well as weight gain); and psychologically, I want to save the big guns for when I really need them.

When the major severe stuff hits me, nothing is able to knock it out like the Rocket Fuel and get me back on track. The last time I needed the combo was in 2006, was on it for about 4 months before slowly switching back to just the Adderall and Prozac. Klonopin can also be added to the combo for some control over anxiety while ramping up and/or down.

I keep hearing about new drug combo's, one Doc wanted me to try Wellbutrin w/ Lithium instead of my Prozac w/ Adderall and I was kinda disturbed. He had heard and read about California Rocket Fuel, but had never used it, which surpised me I guess since nothing has ever compared to the depression fighting power this combo seems to have at least for me.

My blood pressure has always remained the same (low) while taking the combo, and never had an issue with serotonin syndrome. In addition to the standard Effexor/Remeron combo I also add very low doses of Prozac, adderall (in the a.m. only for the most part) and klonopin.

Hope everyone is well =)
