Losing weight fast- what to do?

Posted by Jimmyboy on December 1, 2007, at 13:24:52

I have lost over 20 pounds in the last month due to my new medication / supplement regime for my depresion. i also found out I am allergic to wheat and corn , as well as hypoglycemic.

because of this I basically can't eat much carbs and I have been forced to do trhe "high -protein diet" , not because I want to lose weight but b/c of my allergy and blood sugar issues. Anyone have any idea how to stop losing weight so rapidly?

Weight gainers are full of carbs , I believe, but don;t know much about it. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate hearing them.

One piece of advice: see a dietitian. If you've got problems with wheat and corn, you'll need to find other sources of starch in your diet. A good dietitian -- look for a Registered Dietitian, not just a "nutritionist" -- can help you with this.

You need carbohydrates in your diet. Without them, you start using proteins to meet your energy needs, which can result in excessive ketone bodies -- something you don't want. The trick is to structure your diet in such a way that your blood sugar does not fluctuate excessively -- and that's where a good, knowledgeable dietitian can help you.

Good luck.

Jimmyboy sounds basically like the Atkins diet not healthy. And a lot of it is water weight but you lose muscles from heart and other internal organs too. Yes you need a Registered Dietician. Phillipa ps I went on the diet years ago and came out diabetic told to go home and eat a lot of carbs and then restest. Did and found out I have low blood sugar.

You could try adding a low dose of something known to cause weight gain, something that would go along with prozac nicely. Considering the ongoing anxiety issues, zyprexa would end that anxiety beginning immediately and would also start the process of weight gain immediately. Remeron is another possibility, though maybe not as strong or fast on anxiety. Weight gain, yes. I low dose of a tricyclic like nortriptyline usually has people complaining of weight gain.

When I stopped zyprexa I went from 150lbs to 125lbs in 3 months, eating more than ever. You want a weight gain monster, and an immediate anxiety crusher, then you might want to take a look at zyprexa. Not to mention it synergizes very well with prozac for depression, treatment resistant depression, and bipolar disorders.

I believe you can eat more carbs if done the right way. There are plenty of specialty foods, and I eat them all, made from brown rice, amarynth, quinoa, millet, buckwheat, and others. Brown rice probably most common. Buy them ready-made or buy the gluten free flour from Red Mill brand to make your own breads, cakes, pizza crusts, brownies, etc. Rice pasta is easy to buy. Watch for sugar though. In recipes, use 1/4 or 1/2 sugar that it calls for. Or some honey. Or brown rice syrup. Stevia extract is incredibly sweet in tiny amounts, has a strange aftertaste, but is a good substitute.

Potatoes...eat the skin because it turns a fast carb into a slow carb. Eat all the carbs you want, but make sure to mix them with slow carbs and proteins to avoid the insulin peaks and valleys.

Still though, with known food sensitivities, you know there is something going on in the intestines that aint right. So ongoing treatment with high doses of digestive enzymes and probiotics will help you absorb all you eat and help the intestines heal.

For pharamceutical help, I guess you could consider low dose zyprexa, remeron, or a tricyclic like nortriptyline. All have common complaints of rapid weight gain. Even I, who can't gain weight to save the world, gained 10 pounds real fast on zyprexa.

My normal baseline weight was about 140lbs. I shot up to 150 on zyprexa. These days, with no drugs, and now with a gluten sensitivity, I am at 125lbs and cannot gain weight no matter what. I know one of the above drugs would do it though.

Thanks for the advice, I am not actually taking prozac, but still have some anxiety, although a million times less lately. Is zyprexa really sedating during the day? I certainly don;t need that. Did zyprexa help with social anxiety, or being more outgoing? What about sexual side effects on a small dose of zyprexa?

Thanks alot.

I think zyprexa would obviously be sedating during the day when you first start it, like maybe for a few days. Tolerance to that builds fast. It is not the heavy sedation of a seroquel or a remeron. I found the optimum time to take it was about 4pm, with a relaxing evening beginning about 6pm, and ready for bed at 9pm. 5mg would feel powerful to start in my opinion. Half of a 2.5mg tab would be better to feel it out and go from there, with 5mg as a ceiling (I am safety conscious of longterm AP usage).

Zyprexa was great for social anxiety and outgoing. I mean, it didn't make me want to, but it made it comfortable when I did.

During the first couple months zyprexa will elevate prolactin levels somewhat, which decreases libido and your important parts might not respond as well as you are accustomed to. No anorgasmia though. The good thing is that after a couple months, in my experience and in clinical studies, that prolactin level returns to its baseline level. It's hard to predict though because zyprexa also partially blocks some serotonin receptors, with that blockade being beneficial for sex. And it increases brain levels of norepinephrine and dopamine, good for sex. Overall, it had minimal impact on my sex life. Prozac was the one that hurt the most. Viagra 50mg was more than enough to overcome and actually if I had a partner that got more involved with foreplay I would not have needed the viagra at all.

I generally do not recommend APs. But if someone is interested, I say keep the doses low. Zyprexa was a good friend for a long time and might be again someday. I know if I wanted to gain weight in a hurry and sleep awesome, it would sure do that.
