Since SSRI works by inhibiting reuptake of serotonin , I know SSRE enhances the action of reuptake, so it doesn't make sense to me how does it work to be an anti-depressant??
thank you for your answering.

"In general, the relationships between brain serotonin concentrations and BDNF expression are very complex, but previous studies have suggested that both higher (such as caused by serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and lower (such as effected by tianeptine) concentrations of free serotonin might induce BDNF expression in such brain regions as the frontal and parietal cortex. So as I understand it Tianeptine may be effective in anxiety treatment just like as any SSRI ?
sounds to me still intricated since both SSRI and SSRE does enentually the same thing (with the BDNF thing) so it doesn't explain why certain people undergo different experience of each of these two class of drugs.
Anyway to me SSRI were a one big failure becuase of a very high muscles tension everytime I take them.
I can guess SSRE is just another way to bring more money to pharmacies's pocket?.

According to wikipedia SSRE have less side-effects and provide better anxiolytic effect.

The contradictiveness between SSRE and SSRI really illustrates how little science knows about depression.

SSREs are not just another way to line the drugmaker's pockets. Tianeptine works, for some but not others, just as SSRIs work for some but not others. For me it provides better anxiety control and equal antidepressant effect, with no observable side-effects, for which I'm very grateful.
I aree with medweirdo that the situation merely indicates how little is known about depression. There are dozens of antidepressants with very different profiles and mechanisms of action, and they all work somewhat. No one really knows why.
For what it's worth, tianeptine also raises levels of dopamine in certain areas of the brain, by about twenty percent, and reduces the release of acetylcholine. Either could conceivably be related to its antidepressant action.
