I've decided that I'd like to switch from super-sedating geodon to activating abilify. Is there any evidence or experience with this med bringing about episodes of mania or hypomania.
(I'm just thinking about my 4 day trial of Wellbutrin)
I'm on
Geodon 180mg
Provigil 200
Lamictal 300mg
and the occasional tiny dose of klonopin.dx is PTSD, with history of severe depression, anxiety. Family history of bipolar and schizoph.
The best meds for me have been provigil- helps with my inattention, klonopin- helps with hypervigilince and panic, and lamictal helped pull me out of a pretty bad depression/anxiety [my pdoc wants to call it mixed or rapid cycling] this spring.
I'm concerned that quitting the geodon and adding abilify might make me a bit hyper? But it's also a mood stabilizer.
sorry I go on so long. just thought I'd say too much than too little.

Lurpsie what happened on the wellbutrin and how high was your dose and is this going to be a stop geodon and immediatedly abilfy? Love Phillipa

I was up 23 hours a day, nauseous for 23 hours a day. Thought I was losing my mind. ugh.>and how high was your dose
I don't remember. That bottle is misplaced...> and is this going to be a stop geodon and immediatedly abilfy? Love Phillipa
Whatever pdoc decides. I guess the literature suggests that it's better to taper up before taper down on anti-psychotics.

Everyone responds differently. Pdoc and I actually suspect that abilify might be making me more tired even though it is supposed to be activating. But, I should add, abilify has been really helpful for my depression.
Good luck!

My brother took Abilify specifically to try to help calm his mania and clear his thoughts. He tends to have thoughts that jump around a lot when he is manic and he couldn't focus in school, so pdoc prescribed Abilify. However, he started having uncontrollable foot-tapping and other things like that that can be pretty serious and possibly permanent when taking a med like that, so he had to stop. But it didn't induce hypomania at all.

Abilify was the worst drug I ever took. I developed severe akathisia.

Lurpsie the reason I asked about the wellbutrin was that it was prescribed for me at l50mg and I appeared manic to the pdoc and landed in the hospital. One week of it. Glad there will be a taper involved most probably with the antipsychotics and sorry about your stash hope insurance paid for them the geodon. Love Phillipa

I've been on 2 mgs since last monday per day, and I guess the level of it has been building up, because I am beginning to feel some serious motivation/activation that I did not have before.
The world did seem like a glorious place today..and trust me, I don't tend to think like that! oh lurpsie! the possibilities!! lolbut really, I did feel a little hyped up, but now I just feel some anxiety and energy that I feel the need to use.
I did just stop seroquel so I am also experiencing the world once again without sedation. I am no longer a lump on the couch, bed, etc...so, so far so good, as long as I can tolerate the anxiety
good luck lurpsie

I'd be trying to keep the dose low enough to avoid akathesia.
It seems to be a common effect.
Maybe go up slowly?

At what dose? Usually don't see this until 15 mg or above...

I think it made me hyper manic? Thoughts got carried away very easily. Yes it was very anti-depressing at times and very depresing at others. Lots of fear and anxiety. Much more quick to act. I slept a lot less. Nightmares, that I would drink away in order to sleep. Drained my energy, very dizzy standing especialy after a drink, no energy to move, but always had to do something.
Zyprexa,
please.

When do you take your 2mg Abilify, morning or bedtime?

I would be interested in this info from the people taking Abilify as well.
I am taking my 5mg before bed (only 2 days at this dose) I gather that it may become more activating after awhile and I may need to switch.
Hope so. The last couple of days have been good for me. Abilify?? Hope so.

After a very bad trial of Abilify, I did very very well on it when I started again and titrated the dose very slowly. I am on 10 mg and its great. But i started at like 2.5, went up from there. Made a huge difference in my response to it.

I went and saw my new pdoc. he mentioned abilify as a possible substitute for geodon, but wants to get my records from old pdoc and look over my charts before he makes any decicions/changes.
That means 3 more weeks on stupefying geodon. timing my doses with exquisite precision. doubling up on the provigil. avoiding klonopin except when necessary. going to bed as early as humanly possible.

Hi Shasling,
What made you decide to give it another try?
Did you get the anxiety/restlessness on it?Thanks!

> kayeHonestly thats a great question, but I don't really know the answer. I think it was just a vague feeling that I had had such high hopes for it maybe I ought to try one more time, slower, because it was obviously too much dopamine that made me feel so bad. The bad reaction seemed to me to be almost schizo-affective: I was paranoid and had all these random conversations going on in my head, i was terrified, was waiting to actually hear voices, feelings of surreallity with everyday things like working, driving, etc. So yeah, Id say I had anxiety, though I dont recall any specific reslessness.
Oh and one thing I should mention, my dose is doubled due to the fact that I take tegretol which over-metabolizes several drugs, abilify one of them. So now Im on 10 mg, but its really like about 5, cause they say to double the dose if youre on tegretol. During the bad reaction phase I jumped right in with 20 mg in one dose (I split mine now), which was like 10 if not taking tegretol. If that makes sense.
I just love this drug, it changed my life. Id tried every damn drug for like 25 years and it was as if every single one of them was a placebo. With abilify as the foundation of my current cocktail I do about 70% as well as the average non-depressed person and Ill take that. It a hell of a lot better than the 10% I lived with ever since I can even remember. I remember being depressed in kindergarden, ugh.
Good luck,
Suzie
