How many take a benzo with their antidepressant and if you've been on benzos for a long time do you go off them if you're steady in you dose and don't raise them? Love Phillipa

Hi Phillipa! I'm not on AD's but I have always taken a benzo with any med I've been on. If I'm doing well on a benzo, I just don't take one. I'm always on an as needed basis. Sometimes I'll go 2 weeks, taking one daily and then I'll go 2 weeks without needing one. I started with ativan but during a really rough period I was taking 2 a day and I was scared of addiction. I asked to be switched to clonazepam because it lasts a lot longer and it's less addicting (but still addictive).

I find they are both very effective. Ativan worked quicker and perhaps was a little more relaxing but clonazepam definitely helps the anxiety. I would never want to take it everyday for a long period of time because of the addiction potential. I'd be scared the dr. would rip it away on me.

I hope my post helped. Take care.

Crissi

The thing is PJ, there's not a lot of point in taking something which isn't helping. Despite taking Valium, you're suffering from severe anxiety. I honestly don't think it's helping you. This is why I recommend that you taper off it very gradually.....not necessarily now, but eventually.

I currently take about .5-1.5mg klonopin a day, and I also take lamictal for depressive symptoms.

My pdoc prescribes them if I ask him, and if he thinks I need them.

Some days I don't take any. Sometimes I take them for night terrors. Sometimes I take them in preparation for a really rough day at work. It just depends.

Isn't there some concern that benzos may aggrevate depressive symptoms?

my pdoc tells me that he is not worried about it being a drug I'm likely to abuse, but just that it might numb me too much to get much work done in therapy. Not to mention that they are sedating and that another med I'm on is also sedating.

if the benzos are not working well, why don't you try benedryl with your ADs

They work very well to let me sleep at night and I'm getting out a lot more during the day and doing things I haven't done in a long time. Saw the pdoc today who isn't worried and said to continue as prescribed. I don't take another sedating med. Love Phillipa

I take Valium 5mg TID (3x/day) along with Stablon. I've been on benzos for roughly 17 years on doctor's prescription and have found that I've needed less since being on Stablon and a gluten-free/casein-free diet. I lowered my dose from the typical 5mg QID (4x/day) down to 3x/day two months ago without major problems. It is still very effective and I might consider tapering the dosage more in the future if all keeps going well.

Take care!

I take 4mg of Klonopin with Cymbalta. I have to take both or else I am too anxious. They abruptly withdrew me form the Klonopin and not only was that a disaster but quite dangersous as well. Now I am much mroe careful with my meds. Right now the combination seems to be okay and I am sleeping better and my anxiety/depression is a little better.
take care

generic xanax (Greenstone) with generic prozac (Bar labs)
quite cheap (Sam's club pharmacy) and fairly effective for me
it was a long road to find the right mix but it's been at least "ok" for almost 2 years now

my pdocs retired and my gp won't write xanax so I'm going to have to do some searching for a new pdoc
