Hey.
I started nortriptyline a few days ago. I am on 75 mg which I think is a low dose. It makes me really tired.
I know I am jumping the gun, but what meds would augment nortriptyline? What about Prozac?

Hi Maxime,
I've used nortriptyline with Nardil in the past. Though officially contraindicated, it can be a very good combination for treatment resistant depression. There is even some evidence that it can make the MAOI safer than taking the MAOI alone. Adding Nardil, a little at a time, to an established dose of nortriptyline is the preferred way to augment the nortriptyline. If your doctor is apprehensive there are lots of PubMed abstracts which show that these two medications can be taken together.
Good Luck,

Hey.
My pdoc will let me trying anything as long as it is not a narcotic. I was on Nardil and it made me lactate, so I don't want to try it again (happened a couple of times).
Do you know what the average dosage of Nortriplyline should be?
Thank you.
Maxime

I believe the average dose of nortriptyline is less well established than with other tricyclics. That said, here is what's given on SLS's site:Nortriptyline dosage:
50-100mg (per day)
(150mg max)http://sl.schofield3.home.att.net/medicine/psychiatric_drugs_chart.html
That dose range is in line with the dose I was on some years ago.
Perhaps you could try augmenting it with another MAOi besides Nardil? If monitored carefully, the combination is supposed to be safe.
If tiredness is your issue, however, perhaps you could try provigil instead. Of course, if you have a relaxed sort of doc, maybe dextroamphetamine, amphetamine mixed salts (adderall), or methylphenidate/ritalin, might help with that, too.

I am taking 30 mg of Adderall XR. I can no longer tolerate MAOIs (I don't know why but I get a blinding headached from them now even on the lowest dosage). Thanks for taking the time to make some suggestions. I appreciate it.
