Damn I'm in a bad situation at the moment
I've been suffering from nasty anxiety and depression for several months now, I was on 60mgs of Nardil, but it didn't seem to be doing much!
I have this horrible feeling were my thoughts keep looping back to something stupid I've done.
Specifically the misuse of Dexedrine which got me in this siutation.
I just let it run over & over in my mind, I can't seem to stop it.What none Benzo medication are there for panic and axiety, as well as obsesive thoughts?
I'm getting really worried, because Nardil didn't do much for me, that supposed to be the big one!
Keep thinking about sucied, driving my parents up the wall, with my attitude!

Hey Tom,
I am currently taking 5 mg of Zyprexa for sleep and panic and it seems to be doing the trick. If the thought of taking an anti-psychotic freaks you out, you might want to try a tricyclic such as Doxepin.
Hope you find something that helps.

Perhaps your Nardil dose was too low. Many people have to take 90mg to get the effect. It also sometimes takes 6 weeks or more to kick in.

How did you get Dexedrine in the UK?
Have you tried clomipramine? It can be quite good for panic, anxiety and OCD. I have similar symptoms and seem to be helped by tianeptine, which has fewer side effects. Lyrica may also help and it is licensed for GAD in the UK - you can use it to augment Nardil.

Tom I'm sorry about the land of my birth's attitude to benzos. How can it be OK to prescribe Zyprexa but not a benzo? Nardil while it can be effective comes with dietary restrictions that can make it dangerous if these are ignored. And then there's often weight gain. Zyprexa caused me weight gain and loss of control of my blood sugar (I'm diabetic II). Benzos OTOH are benign, safe in overdose and pretty effective for most. Their only problem is they are somewhat habit-forming, especially Xanax. And there is the reason for the bigotry

There are many problems with long-term benzo use besides their habit forming/addictive potential Fred. Tolerance is the main, with agoraphobia, monophobia, depression and OCD being the other major drawbacks. British doctors do use benzos, but tend to limit their prescriptions to courses of 2-4 weeks to avoid these problems, sometimes prescribing repeat short courses for many years if necessary. That's not bigotry, it's common sense - a most English virtue.

Please no argument just stating what's happening. Saw a new pdoc with the highest credentials holistic minded too and does regular MD stuff too. He evaluated me for an hour this week and wants me off all ad's says my diagnois is anxiety related. Last meds on his list for me were atypical antipsychotics cause of weight and diabetes and all the stuff they are coming out with. His plan is to see me baseline without any ad's on March 21 and then unless I get depressed put me on long acting xanax as monotheraphy. I've cut down on the luvox already and feel better those chemicals don't work with my brain. And he said to stay on the benzos I'm currently on til the baseline appointment. So not all docs think like the UK ones do. I have friends in some Universities here that agree. Love Phillipa ps I'm talking pharmocology professors

Phillipa, we seem to go in circular arguments with benzos. You suffer extreme anxiety to the point of dissociation, agoraphobia, monophobia, depression and OCD, all of this despite taking three benzos and an antidepressant, and all of which emerged during treatment with benzos - a near perfect example of why UK doctors advise against long-term benzo use. There are certain highly qualified and experienced psychopharmacology professors infamous here for supporting that view.
If benzos were working for you, you wouldn't have these problems. I don't see that pdoc's logic at all since Luvox is an anxiolytic antidepressant and as I said earlier, the benzos aren't working for you any more, so switching to another probably won't solve the problem, but I don't doubt you'll continue to take them and defend them regardless.

For some, it takes 6-8 weeks to kick in, and maybe a week or two more. I hope you gave it a fair trial because it has one of the best reputations for depression in the history of meds. Praying for you, man. Michael

Quintal I said before I think that this pdoc thinkd it's a physical condition my thyroid and once it is regulated right and he's working with the endo that I won't require even thyroid meds.Plus all the autoimmune things I have. And now look at blueberry? Love Phillipa ps we don't sell codeine over the counter either.

OK Tom, for arguments sake, let's say you have damaged yourself irreparably by the foolish and wilful use of Dexedrine.
And that the shame of such idiocy is something you can't bear to put up with in yourself.
How do you forgive yourself?
But then after a lot of idiocy (speaking personally here) you can just think 'Oh f*ck it, it's too late for everything, forgiveness included'.
I'm reminded now that it's easier to be kind to others than it is to be kind to oneself.

Hi Tom - I took Nardil about 10 years ago, and after 6-7 weeks I just woke up one day a different person - like 99% improved. So it did take awhile to work. I don't even know how to say this, but it is upsetting to me to hear you are in such a bad place! Sorry, man. You know that I have been looking for a non benzo, also - I am still totally addicted, dependant, whatever, on Clonazepam. My low dose of .75 a day does not work anymore and I believe makes me more depressed. I cannot find the magic bullett, either! I do hope that today you are feeling better! I would like to add that you are really young, and there is time to heal - hang in there buddy. Write. Richard

I don't see any use in short courses of benzos. What happens in between the courses? Just suffer I suppose

Well I suppose that's to be expected Fred.
>What happens in between the courses?
You would almost certainly be prescribed an antidepressant that had some anxiolytic/antipanic properties to help you cope in the interim. In any case the aim of therapy is to give you a window of opportunity to help you learn ways of helping yourself. The period in between courses is gradually extended until you are doing well by yourself, or on an antidepressant of some kind. It's also possible to use Lyrica to manage anxiety in between courses of benzos.

Quintal that sounds like the old "holiday from anxiety" idea. I've yet to find an antidepressant that helps with anxiety apart from brief experiences, eg Paxil after about 6 weeks gave me about 3 hours of calm and then pooped out. I hope to try Nardil soon. Perhaps that will be more successful
