I just had a very frightening experience. I have recently started 300 mg of Seroquel at night. I went out for some beers and came home and took a dose and I blacked out. At 6:00 a.m. I got up to feed my dogs and could barely walk. I fell down in the kitchen breaking the scoop cups and dog food was everywhere. I hit the side of my eyebrow and it feels like a bruise but didn't turn into one. Anyways, just a warning to those who are taking Seroquel. I will never drink again! I'm so glad to be alive to tell the tale!

Yeah, dont mix booze and anti-psychotics ever.

Sounds very frightening and thankfully you're okay. Better go rest now. Love Phillipa

All the literature provided with all of the medications we are all on, has warning about combining them with alcohol. That is a basic premise, right?
Occasionally a glass or two may be OK after you have been on something for awhile but when you are starting new meds or are on combos, it is especially dangerous. I fell and cracked my two front teeth while on Lamictal without the benefit of any alcohol, so, those are the risks...
I'm always surprised when someone here is asking if they can drink alcohol at all. It is always at your own risk and one may be able to, another (myself)will fall flat, as you did.
The choice is either or, not both.

Thank you all for writing to me. I am still having freaked out feelings about what happened. I had this happen to me once before years ago when someone slipped something in my drink. I was not on any meds at the time. It hit me like a ton of bricks and I couldn't stay upright, my husband had to basically carry me to bed. I was foolish for mixing, it was just that I had been on Zyprexa for so long and never had this problem so didn't think a few beers would put me out with Seroquel. Now I know different. No more alcohol for me! I feel lucky to be alive!

OK, Im not a drunk. I drink maybe 1-2 times per month, and then may have two or three margaritas. The thing is, on Seroquel (25 to 200mg), it never made me drunk or buzzed. Interesting.
Every med affects everyone differently.

The reason you blacked out is not because of an antipsychotic -- it is because of the unique properties of Seroquel. It frequently causes orthostatic hypotension, or low blood pressure. This is part of the H1 antihistamine reaction and is part of the reason for sleepyness and why some people take a very small amount for sleep (because only H1 is activated at that level).
The same can be said for Trazodone, which is probably also the reason priapisms occur because blood can flow in different ways, in males.
I had a similar tale with Trazodone. I had most of a bottle of hard cider and I had thought I had cleared it from my system, but obviously not. I took the Trazodone, had to get up to use the loo, and found myself 2 hours later on the ground of a bathroom floor at an acquaintance's having blacked out. It was the only time I blacked out in my life.
Now were you in life threatening danger, who knows -- depends if you hit a ceramic counter or something. But the same can be said for all things. It's also a very not good idea to down a shot of tequila after taking propranolol.
Point being, don't take alcohol within a few hours or the half life of a an agent that causes or is intended to cause low blood pressure
-- glad you're safe-- tidings

Been there. I think it messes with blood pressure when alcohol is in the equation? Any way I've found that mixing pills and alcohol isnt good, as a rule of thumb. Even though I go against my own advice once in awhile. I used to get up to feed the seroquel munchie beast, and couldnt walk.

dbc, advice well taken! Phillipa, thanks for your concern! stargazer, I know the literature all says not to combine alcohol with any of what I have been taking, but with Zyprexa I never had this problem. UgottaHaveHope, interesting! I must be a lightweight! yxibow thanks for your detailed response. Luckily I missed the ceramic counter! TheMeanReds glad you are okay too!
