A friend said that someone she knew had had a nervous breakdown. I quizzed her as to what the symptoms were but I'm none the wiser. Isn't it about time we stopped using vague terms like this? Burn-out is another

Hi Fred
Crackups and breakdowns are as good as the DSM with me.
I don't think 'science' is appropriate or helpful here, although I wish it were.

hi, im sharon, and i live in a nervous breakdown. I wake up and my heart beats so fast that i cannot breath, then i start to cry hysterically, after a while of that, i go into fits of rage and through things and break things, just to releive the anger or tension or someting. it just when your head has had more than it can handle and it sort of explodes for a little while, but in my case it exploded a few years ago and never reassembled. Maybe a state of giving up, im not sure, i sure wish i could find some cure or help for it before i end up commited from it. its almost to much to bare anymore. hope i could help, and i hope that you are not haveing a breakdown they really suck!!!

I had one ... a real one. March 06.
Cried like a howling cub for hours in a place where no one could here me.
Became still and silent and sad.
Called my daughter and said 'all I need is a place to sleep and food' (I had my own place.) and she said 'come over'.
Over the next three days I began hyperventilating pretty much 24/7 (well minus some sleep), became weaker and weaker physically, walking by holding onto furniture or walls, barely able to eat, just sit staring at the sky, hard to breathe. Still hyperventilating and getting worse. Felt like I was aging and dying.
Admitted to hospital and two docs looked at each other and laughed when I said "Do U no what a nervous breakdown is?". I almost passed out many times while there. Hyperventilating so much that the top of my head hurt. At one point I felt paranoia.
When I rec'd Valium ... I was saved.
I'm now on it 10mg 3x day.
And, now, it is 'likely to re-occur' in my life.
It was soooo physical.
Yes there are many misconceptions and the blatant laugh by the doctors was one of them.
They had a 'case study' staring at them and didn't even see it.
That's a nervous breakdown.

Hi Fred
>what's a nervous breakdown?
An episode of mental illness, often referring to an illness which caused someone to take time off work - may be stress related. Yes, it's vague, but 'depression' is pretty vague too.

RU topped out on the Xanax? Do you need Valium? Don't let yourself go much longer in this state RJ. Like I said, Valium literally SAVED my life and my mind.
Who said 'well not a full blown one, but a semibreakdown'(?) ... think I missed a post.
I think you know, if don't get help in time, the nervous system shuts off it's connection to our minds and we could end up somewhere we never want to end up.

No the remeron didn't help the rage, nothing has helped the rage, but its there, and its deep and it comes out more than it used to. Sometimes i just get so angry, and sad and then more angry, that its just like pure hate in me, and i dont even know what against. It is just there, and sometimes it comes out. One day I almost decapitated my husband with a giant coffee mug from 15 feet away, and dont even know what he said, hes not mean to me or nothing like that, Just must have been his tone i dont something made me go red, really almost decapitated him, missed by a c*ck hair, would have took every tooth out of his head, scared the hell out of him, after that we went on the search to find out what is wrong with me and how to fix it.
This is the end of the thread.
