I am out of here; too much BS. In my humble opinion there are people who want to help others, people who avoid helping themselves, and people who play games. It does not matter to me what anyone says about any of my comments here. I am still a firm believer that medications are not the entire answer. For some, medications are the major part of what they need; for others it is a matter of maybe 50%, and for others, it may be a minor part of the issue. This is my opinion. I just need to get off of reading and posting. I need to focus on myself now and said this once before. This time I will stick to it.

Medications are never the entire answer in mental illness (which I firmly believe is biochemical in nature.) Actually anything you do is biochemical, if you want to walk down the street, or open the door, some neurotransmitters are operating in your brain all the time processing these requests. Its a shame here in the US that insurance providers consider mental illness secondary largely (in fact often contracted out to secondary corporations other than your primary provider) and put lower caps on treatment and largely the HMO operation is go to your doctor once or twice a month for 15 minutes and get a script.
I am fortunate to have parents to be able to support me to provide what should be the model -- namely psychotherapy (of whatever sort you need, whether its psychodynamic, or behavioural or all sorts of different ones), plus medication as an aid but not always as a solution.
I wish there was a pill to cure what I have but I know at the moment I have to deal with it and eventually make a life back again somehow. That's the hard part, and that's therapy, which is frequently either covered very little, or for short sessions (typical "crisis" management with HMOs) to deal with specific matters.
So I think its a combination of both, really, for hard case situations. Sure, maybe someone with dysthymia (minor depression) can get by on Lexapro and an occasional psychotherapy session once a month, but its not enough for those with more complex disorders.

You know what is best for you.

I am disturbed by this characterization. Since many of the posts here are mine, I can't help but to feel offended in some way.
> In my humble opinion there are people who want to help others,
I'm glad that this becomes obvious.
> people who avoid helping themselves,
If this is true, then these people are in particular need of patience and guidance. I don't know if it is anyone's intention upon birth to remain in a state of perpetual discomfort. This "avoidance", as you put it, is part of the problem and needs to be considered in the formulation of a solution. That a solution is actually being sought is evident in the presence of a person here, and is thus a true step in that person helping themselves. There is therefore no true avoidance, but perhaps an inability to attend.
> and people who play games.
Perhaps. I really don't see much of that going on here, though. Then again, it is my nature not to look for such things.
> It does not matter to me what anyone says about any of my comments here.
That is a pretty strong thing to say. I'm not sure how many people are truly insensitive to the disapproval of the majority. That is not to say that you are in the minority, of course.
> I am still a firm believer that medications are not the entire answer.
I guess that depends on what the question is.
> For some, medications are the major part of what they need; for others it is a matter of maybe 50%, and for others, it may be a minor part of the issue. This is my opinion.
You are probably in the majority, afterall.
> I just need to get off of reading and posting.
That happens quite often to a great many of us for a variety of reasons.
> I need to focus on myself now and said this once before. This time I will stick to it.
I hope you continue to discover what things are best for you and incorporate them into your life in a manner that enhances its quality.
Good luck.

Karen,
I saw your post today. I am interested in what you wrote in regards to your beliefs about , I guess, psychotropic medications.
I like emailing at this time, vs posting, and see that you also wrote that you wanted to not post or read here.
I have a very extensive body of research concerning psychotropic drugs that I could share with you at your request.
Please feel free to email me if you like.

It's not perfect, but it's great. There are ppl in here who really want to help others like nowhere else on the Internet. It's OK to voice your opinions and take a break, everyone does.
On a personal note, I agree with one of your points: With the exception of serious and documented emotional illnesses (and my heart goes out to them, I cant even imagine your pain), I think meds are the short-term answer (and thank God for them), with the long-term solution being transforming your mind and thoughts.
This is the end of the thread.
