Kind of a loaded question...I realize.
I'm talking in terms of cardiovascular. It's tough to come upon actual objective comparisons. The official line is that they're generally comparable in terms of safety and side effects, with the exception of amphetamine being more peripherally activating.
Just curious if anyone has any thoughts to the contrary. Thanks...peace...saturn.

If the cardiovascular side effects were purely due to the sympathetic activation, then a beta blocker might reduce the problems. If it was something else, then its difficult to say.
I would venture to guess that your first best bet is to make sure your cardiovascular parameters are in top shape during treatment.

I'd say just make sure you dont have underlying cardio issues, and do your usual check ups..stimulants are pretty safe, usually.
And..you might be better off going with Dexedrine over adderall; I think adderall tends to have slightly more pronounced cardio effects. Desoxyn, I imagine, would have fewer than dex, since the dosage is usually pretty low.

Fortunately all my cardiovascular parameters are in top shape (recently had a stress echocardiogram/EKG), just not when I take stims.
My doc wants me to try concerta w/ atenolol, but I'm wondering if it might be better to take it w/ Dexedrine for reasons stated in a recent post:http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20060623/msgs/662606.html
I just dunno. I've totally put my ADHD treatment on the backburner due to my concerns about heart effects. I am *super*sensitive to stims in this regard. Peace.

I agree from experience Dexedrine is slightly better than Adderall in this regard, though I cannot tolerate either. I've heard conflicting reports regarding the peripheral effects of Desoxyn. It's purported to have the least peripheral side effects, but I don't know really how much better it would be in this regard. For example, as mentioned I find Dex and Adderall pretty similiar in regard to peripheral side effects, though as you mention Dex is slightly less activating on the body. What I'd really like to know is how Desoxyn compares to Ritalin in terms of cardiovascular side effects, but I've yet to find any info on this.

But I got a suspicion amphetamines are more damaging to the actual brain than is ritalin- I once saw an ad for a study calling specifically for former adderall users to measure their level of brain damage via some MRI machine or brain scanner.

I know what you are saying. I had a few doctors that leaned that way with me, but I was totally uncompliant after reading some of the recent information.
I can get by in school without them. I just need to take breaks every 20 minautes and go jogging, then come back.
When I took ritalin, it was probably the first time that I was able to concentrate on one thing for an hour.
I guess I figured that as long as I could get by, it certainly isn't a degenerative disorder, and we might know more about the disease in the future, and perhaps safer treatments.

I think that on the high end of a theraputic dose taken long term, you may start to see some problems, though I havn't seem any studies conclusively suggesting that low/moderate doses lead to problems.
