Hi,
I was put on Lamictal (25 mg, for depression) about a month ago, with positive results and few side-effects.
Then (20-25 days after starting medication), about six days ago, I started experiencing a collection of symptoms--fatigue, somnolence/tiredness, mild 'fuzzy head' feeling, mild hot and cold flashes, mild stomach upset. Intensity of symptoms varies.
Has anyone had a similar experience? I don't want to go off the med, but a doc has suggested that it might be hypersensitivity to it.
Wishing the rest of you well,
Psychobot5000

I just had to discontinue it too at 50mg working up to l00mg to augment my luvox. I developed excess saliva had to spit constantly in a cup. Disgusting and then I got a few sores near my mouth, diarrhea a few times so the doc discontinued it till he could reassess me which will be on Tuesday. Please do a Goggle search. I learned that the saliva indead was an uncommon side effect. It was amazing what I learned. Love Phillipa ps I liked it to. One day off saliva gone and mouth sore too.

I seem extremely sensitive to lamictal, maybe more than you. I give it credit for lifting me out of deep despair worthlessness hopelessness crying type depression within 3 days. I mean, I don't feel good, I'm a long way from well, but it definitely has lifted me from the depths.
And this is at just 6mg. Yeah, 6mg. But even at 6mg, there is a strange mix of lethargy/somnolence combined with restlessness gut anxiety all at the same time. Bizarre. And leg cramps are horrible. My startle response has increased also...small noises seem louder and startle me.
I tried 12.5mg and it was a very drugged feeling, like maybe taking an overdose of klonopin. 25mg practically had my left leg paralyzed and I was in a stupor.
I'm hoping if I give it a few weeks it will mellow out.

Actually I spoke too soon. The crying despair type depression that lamictal ended has returned today. So in addition to be extremely sensitive to it, it isn't helping at the current dose and reaching a higher dose is impossible to fathom.

Those symptoms that you talk about; I wouldn't say I got them from the Lamictal as I had that kind of thing before I went on it (except for the flashes). If anything that kind of thing improved for me (along with the depression) as I increased the dose over a period of several months.
I have been on it for a year now and am on 400 mgs. As far as I can tell the only side effects I had were headaches just after a dose increase. Oh, I may have got some odd head sensations at the very low doses too (under 25 mg).
It has been great for me the only trouble is I'm starting to get a bit of poop out. It is still containing heaps of bad stuff though at this point.

maybe cut the dose in 1/2 till you feel okay again, then gradully build the dose back up.

I have a feeling the doc will restart the lamictal when he sees me on Tuesday as really there must be something for for the saliva thing. I also did have very mild headaces no aspirin or anything needed. And I think I may have a bit for energy on it. Love Phillipa

hi psychobot,
I don't know you, so i don't know if you're a man or woman. If you're a woman, you might consider the possibility that your cycle is affecting your cognition. Many people find that meds have different effects at different points in the monthly cycle. If you're a man- i guess there's some research that men have monthly hormonal cycles too, but there's far less that's known about cognitive and chemical changes in the brain. it's probably the lamictal.
Sorry I can't be more help

Lots of people have lots of funny side effects on Lamictal -- even at low doses. For many people they abate once they get up to a therapeutic dose of 200mg or so. Do a google search on this site, and check out the forum on Lamictal on Crazymeds.org for lots more patient experiences. Mood swings while titrating up seem to be very, very common. I've also seen several reports of itchiness without rash, headache and night sweats. I got very fuzzy headed, had some cognitive problems (word retrieval), somnolence and eventually -- at 175 mg. -- akathisia. So it wasn't the drug for me. But lots of people have a bumpy ride up and then LOVE it once they're stabilized at a certain dose.

On the left-hand side of the home page there's a section with a list of underlined links -- the first is "introduction" and underneath it is "crazy meds talk." Click on that to get to the forums (fora?). It's nicely organized, I think -- general topics, and then individual drugs by type (antidepressant, anticonvulscant, etc).
