Ever since I started Parnate (tranylcypromine) I have had occasional, mild heart palpitations. They usually occur at night while laying down. They really aren't bothersome so much as kind of curious, although I try and lay on my right side if it does happen. This is independent of any elevation in blood pressure or heart rate (I've checked - I'm holding steady at 108/65 and 60-70 bpm usually.)
Are heart palpitations a side effect you've ever experienced on a medication? Is tranylcypromine known to cause them specifically? Should I be worried?

Hi C
I have frequent 'ectopic beats' - although I don't think they're related to my meds. My heart pauses after each additional/ectopic beat.

Hi Ed,
Does it manifest the same way? Sort of a heightened awareness of your own heartbeat?

> - CI've never had this happen to me and I've been on Parnate off and on for 20+ years. Last year, due to a freak car accident, they discovered I have an aneurysm in my ascending aorta, so I was in the hospital overnight and they ran tons of tests. My heartbeats are fine. Of course, each of us has different reactions to meds. Have it checked out to make sure there isn't something else medically wrong though. That's the wise thing to do. My mom has heart palpitations and isn't on Parnate. Some folks just have them; however, since they started with the Parnate, it could be causing them. If a cardiologist says it's not dangerous, I'd not worrry, but as I said, I'd get it checked out. Always better to be safe than sorry.
Let us know if you find out anything, please.

If you're young I wouldn't worry PAC's. IF you are getting along in age I would have it checked out. I have them when my anxiety is high and I'm getting old. Love Phillipa

Hi C
I think mine are PACs like Phillipa said. I only really notice them when I lie on my left side in bed. I can sometimes feel them then.

Okay, you've got me, what are PACs? I keep thinking about Pac-Man.

PAC's are premature atrial contractions. The heart has an atrium on the right and left side and ventricles on the right and left side. An arrymthmia in the ventricals are called PVS's and can be dangerous. PAC's can be cause by anxiety too. Love Phillpa

Update:
I went to the doc, and he ordered an EKG, TSH, electrolytes labs. (All of those were normal.) He said my heart sounds just fine. I've cut caffeine out of my diet, and the arrhythmias are gone. Either I adjusted to the dose of Parnate or it was the interaction with caffeine. Anyway, I think I'm all good! :-)
sticking to decaf,
