The Antihistamine Ativan (did I spell it right?)
can be the cause of a sudden psychotic episode.

Ativan (lorazepam) is a benzodiazepine, not an antihistamine. It rarely rarely rarely if ever, causes psychosis.
High doses of antihistamines can cause "delirium", a state of mental confusion. Having attempted parasuicide in the past with Benadryl (diphenhydramine) myself, I know all about this. Mind you, that was on an entire bottle.

yup...a lot of the older antihistamines have really strong anti-cholinergic action, so when you take massive amounts of them you can get drug reactions and i think sometimes psychotic reactions (toxic psychosis, I think its called).
Benzos like ativan sometimes induce rage reactions (in this respect, they're kind of like the barbiturates or alcohol) and sometimes, in extremely high doses, you can get bizarre behavior...usually its not a big problem, though (you can even use Ativan and Klonopin to help w/ psychosis and mania). Withdrawal sometimes causes psychotic rections, too (in addition to the occasional seizures).

I had my first panic attack after being given Compazine in an IV in the hospital when I was pregnant.
It completely freaked me out; I felt like I wanted to crawl out of my skin. I was so uncomfortable and shakey. And yet, I had a weird feeling of happiness mixed with weird anxiety.
I do the same thing on Phenergen and SSRI's. It's the same feeling.
I can take small doses of Benadryl; that's it.
