what do dex, nardil, + effexor, have in common???

Posted by bigcat on April 6, 2006, at 20:24:38

Over the course of seven years, I have tried just about every psych med for depression. Many of my tials were prematurely discontinued, or not aggresively pursued, so this time around I want to do it right. I had a profound, though very brief response to Nardil (2 weeks of remission), Dexedrine (3 months of freedom), Marplan (2 months), Effexor (up and down for two months), and Serzone (less than a week). When a med starts to work, it REALLY works, and usually kicks in within two weeks of starting it. After a couple weeks, it will then poop out just as quickly (I'm great Monday, by Thursday I'm right back in the pits). Based on this history, do you have any med or cocktail suggestions? It seems I grow a tolerance to meds very quickly. Parnate and oral eldpryl didn't work for me, but I'm thinking of trying EMSAM. Somer other thoughts are:
-High Dose Effexor + Remeron
-Serzone (staying on it even if the initial response fades)
-Adding wellbutrin, dexedrine, and/or high-dose Fish Oil to any and all med trials
-MAOI + ? (Tricyclic)
-Thyroid supplement

I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions or theories. I suffer from severe depression with anxiety, social phobia, and a loud, obsessing mind. Some meds will make me hypomanic when they start working, but I've never had a spontaneous manic episode.

much love,

Are they all phenylethylamines? Someone will know. Whether that's of any use in any case, I dunno.

Nope. Effexor and Dexedrine are, but not the others.

bigcat, how long do you usually trial these medications? Do you push the dose up to max. recommended?

Hi Matt

Did you manage to come off Effexor? How are you feeling at the moment? What medication are you currently taking?

I've reached the maximum dose of all these meds (Nardil 105mgs, Marplan close to the same, Dexedrine 90mgs, Effexor 375mgs). These meds I have stayed on for at least two months each (since they started working very well very quickly), but many other meds I did not give enough time to see if they would work, therefore I was curious if my response to these meds might indicate a good choice for my next med to try, but this time I will exercise patience and really give ample time for it to work (Parnate I tried for 3 months unsucessfully).

HEY ED!! It's been over a month since I took Effexor and I'm still very depressed. I'm currently not taking anything, but mentioned some of my ideas for what I may want to try next (EMSAM, Effexor with Remeron or Serzone, boosted with wellbutrin or a stimulant). I've been going to a CBT oriented therapist, but I think I'm too depressed right now for it to have any impact on me. I need a source of hope right now. I don't fully trust my pdoc (I think she's timid), but I'm too depressed to do anything about it. Any thoughts? We should chat on msn. Keep an eye out for me and I will for you.

much love,

Hi Matt!!!!!!!!!!

>EMSAM, Effexor with Remeron or Serzone

Did you ever try Remeron on its own?

Emsam is an interesting idea given your previous response to MAOIs. The first babbler to try it just picked it up at the pharmacy. He seems to be doing well on it so far.

I will :D

i couldn't have been on Remeron for more than two weeks when I tried it solo. I'm such a sucker/so easily influenced by this board. i read a post where someone's pdoc said remeron makes effexor 40X more effective, and now based on that one bit of highly contestdable hearsay, I want to try it. likewise if I read something negative about a med I was excited to try, all hope is lost. i realize how foolish this is but it's what I do. Anyway, I am curious about going back on the effexor and adding something to it. i know we talked about 325mg being a high dose, which I understand it is, but reading the pbabble "home page" devoted to effexor, I have read about a few doctors who will push the effexor up past 600mgs with treatment resistant patients.

there is no doubt the effexor worked wonderfully for a brief period, I wonder if a really high dose is what I need. anyway, effexor+remeron is a pretty common combo- they even gave it a name, "California Rocket Fuel". i don't want to be sedated all day and get all kinds of fat, but if it were to work, I wonder if I would be able to counter these side effects. right now I'm not really living anyway, so I have very little to lose in terms of quality of life.

much love,
-matt-

Hi Matt

>i realize how foolish this is but it's what I do

It's what you DID - but not anymore :)

>i know we talked about 325mg being a high dose, which I understand it is, but reading the pbabble "home page" devoted to effexor, I have read about a few doctors who will push the effexor up past 600mgs with treatment resistant patients

I wouldn't recommend it for you Matt. You were not stable on Effexor at all. I think it might be best to try Remeron on its own before considering combinations.

Love

Ed
