A few months ago one of our neighbors told us her
40 year old son had a "breakdown". He was talking
constantly and didn't recognize any one. He was first
taken to a hospital and a day later to a
sanitarium where he was already recovering. Pdoc
had determined he was given Prednizone for a condition
and it was the cause of the breakdown. It hit a little closer to home when my 95 year old
mother started having similar symptoms 3 days ago.
She is 1200 miles from where I live, so I got the
info from her care person. A doctor had precribed
an oral Cortisone drug for her itching. I called the
care person and told her to discontinue the Cortisone
and give her lots of water to flush her
system. After 2 days of raving all night, after
discontinuing the Steroid she was fine and normal
again. Beware of sudden psychotic symptoms cause by
oral steroid intake.

Prednisone is a strange drug. Some people find it euphoric, others depressing. Some people go psychotic.

My mom took predisone for 2 years for a rare skin condition, it caused her to develop depression, sleep problems, and bone loss leading to a possible knee replacement, she was completely unaware this could happen, as was i...john

Hi Phillipa,
she actually had a condition called Bullous Pemphigoid, our family doctor had never dealt with it, she was diagnosed by a specialist,
it is an immune disorder, where the body actually attacks the upper layer of skin, causing severe blisters, they had no other recourse but to prescribe the predisone, but it is so sad the bone loss and depression she has suffered as a result of predisone, although she did take it very long term, [2 years,] which is not usually recommended.
i'm so sorry about your mom Phillipa, thanks for writing, your friend...john

John psoriasis is autoimmune too. It is red itchy and flakes off. You can't even wear short sleeves is it's as bad as her's was a lot of people only have on their scalp or knee, elbows. But it covered her body the worst case the specialists on fith avenue had ever seen. And she took it from the 50's when it first came out til 63 when she died of the complications. Have you ever had your ANA tested? Test for autoimmume diseases. There are so many of them lupus, Renauds, elos danlos, they even think CFS may be one. Hope she's doing better now. Love Phillipa

Phillipa, that makes me feel so bad for you. I'm not on any meds right now and it's made me cry. I have read so many of your posts and a person just never realizes what someone else has gone through in their life until they hear more about them. You must be so strong to have went through that. I don't know what I would've done if I had lost my mother at such a young age. I don't know what I'd do now if I did.(I'm 31 now.)I'm so sorry.

Hi John
Bullous Pemphigoid can sometimes be treated with potent steroid creams. If necessary, oral immunosuppressants can be used.

Thank you Ed,
I wish my GP was as enlightened as you, my mom would have been saved some nasty side-effects, and been treated sooner.
my GP actually referred to my mom's condition to me as that "funky skin disease" when we discussed it, he didn't have a clue. thanks again, i will pass your information on to my mom, she still fears it may return, good to know about other methods of treatment...john

Hi J!
Clobetasol propionate (Temovate cream/ointment) is one of the main treatments for bullous pemphigoid. Serious side effects may occur, but it is less toxic than oral prednisone.

And then I got married had three kids raised they myself father never there and put myself through nursing school with my own money and schlorships graduated magna cum laude. Got divorced he was cheating on me multiple times an alcholic didn't know it and moved myself to VA Beach from CT bought my own house boat built a pool and then my Son lost his eysight in Desert Storm. Hi Ed, thank you so much, i told my mom earlier about the information you gave me, she was so grateful, they told her it can stay in remission, but there is an outside chance it can return.i think you definetly put her at ease, she really doesn't want anymore to do with predisone.
i'll give her the name of the cream, thanks once again, your friend...john

Hi John
Clobetasol cream can be more effective than prednisone........
The role of topical corticosteroids in bullous pemphigoid in the elderly.
Joly P, Fontaine J, Roujeau JC.
Department of Dermatology, Hopital Charles Nicolle, and Inserm U 519, Universite de Rouen, Rouen, France. [email protected]
Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most common autoimmune blistering skin disease. Until recently the condition was treated with oral corticosteroids (eg. prednisone). However, high-dose corticosteroids are poorly tolerated (severe side effects) in the elderly and their use has probably contributed to the high mortality rates observed in several cohorts. Accordingly, considerable effort has been directed at identifying corticosteroid-sparing agents, such as immunosuppressant drugs, plasma exchange techniques, intravenous immunoglobulins and tetracycline, that can be used in this clinical setting. Many of these options have appeared to be useful in open series, but they have been found to be ineffective or only marginally effective when tested in randomised, controlled trials. An important breakthrough occurred with the demonstration in a large, randomised trial that a 'super-potent' topical corticosteroid (clobetasol propionate) was not only associated with a significant ***decrease in severe complications and mortality*** of BP patients, but was also *more effective* than oral prednisone. New strategies for BP should include topical clobetasol propionate as first-line therapy in the elderly and consider adjuvant therapy only in the very rare cases that are either resistant or intolerant to this treatment.
Regards
Ed

I recently had problems with worsening depression and increased suicidal ideation following a cervical steroid injection for pain. My pdoc says its possible, pain doc was dubious.
Discouraging as this puts me another step closer to serious neck surgery.
