serotonin syndrome?

Posted by scribble'ntweak on March 28, 2006, at 13:30:00

I have been taking abilify, for a couple of years now, along with celexa. my normal doses are 10 mg celexa and 15 mg abilify. I have been diagnosed bipolar and schizoaffective.

I recently had a stay in the hospital after my Pdoc suggested we try 7.5 mg of abilify. In the hospital however, they raised my dose of abilify to 30 mg. Ever since then I have had diareaha, and read somewhere that this can be a symptom of strotonin syndrome. I called my Pdoc, and he suggested I half the celexa dose, down to 10 mg. I've been doing this for a week now, and no relief in symptoms. My Pdoc is slightly worthless, I feel like I'm mostly on my own here. I'm thinking of going back to 15 mg of abilify, because I seemed to tolerate that dose well.

Does anyone have any insight here? Please help.

I think the standard doseage of abilfy is from 5-l5mg I would cut down the abilify first. Love Phillipa

The diarhhea you are experiencing is probably a moderate to extreme side effect of large dosage Abilify, but SS has to have a number of things to really qualify it as such.

Idiopathic, abnormally high temperature (sometimes as high as 104) and shivering, hallucinations and confusion, nausea and diarrhea, and rigidity and neuromuscular symptoms. It has similar qualities to NMS (neuroleptic malignant syndrome) except that NMS takes quite a while to develop while SS is 24-48 hours

There is subclinical SS that can sometimes develop with polypharmacy that has mild versions of the above (usually flushing) but usually resolves with a reduction of one of the drugs (I've experienced it, possibly, once.)

Hope that helps
Feel better
