Missed Lamictal for ??? days...Now what?

Posted by Soulnik on March 24, 2006, at 23:27:16

I take my 300 mgs of Lamictal in the morning. I started a new job about 6 weeks ago and have noticed that I have been having a hard time remembering to take it. I bought myself a cute little pill dispenser so I'd be able to keep track but stuff got confused, prescriptions got fouled up, I had to switch some days around, yada, yada, yada, long story short - I know I've missed doses. I know I didn't take it today. I don't remember if I took it yesterday or the day before. What should I do? I can't mess up the Lamictal!!! It's been my saving grace. Any advice?

If you have missed three days of Lamictal, there is a possibility that you will experience a rash-reaction if you restart it at 300mg. One can only guess at how to best restart the drug. If it were me, I would probably shoot for 150mg the first day and raise the dosage by 50mg every day. This would be considered to be a fairly conservative approach, I imagine.

I guess you could try going back up to 300mg immediately and be alert for the appearance of a rash. However, I would definitely recommend that you split up your doses and not take it all at once. Perhaps 75mg every 6 hours?

I developed the dreaded rash in circumstances similar to your own. I hadn't taken my Lamictal for two or three days and within hours of reinitiation of the full dose I turned a lovely shade of red all over, with massively swollen lymph glands. Scary stuff - I don't recommend it.

I was lucky - the rash disappeared within a day or two, but I was playing with fire.

I agree with Scott - the best course of action is to titrate upwards again. I personally would take a week or so to get back up to 300mg, which is a pretty solid dose.

Best of luck,

J.

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up taking it all at once and it's ok so far rash wise. I'd also missed a few days of Lithium. I feel a bit agitated and depressed. I think that the few days of medication muff up kind of has me a little loopy? I don't know. I feel frantic and my mind is racing. My thoughts are obsessive and I feel like I could break things or scream at someone. Like a tea kettle about to whistle. It's not good energy. It's anxious, agitated, breathless, angry energy. Sigh. Hopefully getting the meds back on track will help. I have a job that requires a lot of sensitivity and people contact (I'm a pastor in a church). Screaming at people and breaking things is not a good idea.

Wow! I never thought pastors felt like I do. You'd never know it. I don't mean that to be ugly, it's just that my preacher and other religious people are always fussing at me for having the problems that I do. They tell me I don't put it in Gods hands and that He'll help me if I do.

Utter nonsense!!! First, I am sure that if this thread turns toward religion it will be redirected to another subject area. That being said, people in roles of religious leadership are among the most messed up people in the world! I think that's what leads them to seek God so passionately. The truth is that "putting it in God hands" doesn't mean that we lay about waiting for God to fix it. It means that we feel horrible and complain and wonder why it is the way it is while we try a million medications and thank God for medication and lament that we need medication and cry out for relief and in anger because the meds don't work and we curse and cry and beg and find comfort and need and want and say yes and no and resign ourselves to the possibility that no matter how much we pray this may be what we have to deal with and maybe not. If it were as easy as "putting it in God's hands" preachers and priests would be out of business. Bjork has this song that goes: "It's not meant to be a strain. It's not meant to be a struggle up hill." I'm not sure if she's talking about love or life or what but it's all meant to be hard. None of it is easy and if you have to do it with a mood disorder...
