Hi.
Ive taken pretty much every Antidepressant. SSRI, SNRI, Tricyclic, MAOI, All the Novels. And every time I take one they work nicely for about 2 weeks then completly fail.
Has anyone experienced anything similar to this and found a solution?

Effexor and Nardil work the best for me but I dunno. I always take my whole dose in the mourning, splitting the dose probably wouldn't help huh.
Ive read about Litium, Naltrexone, (Pindolol didn't work) but its hard & expensive to find a Psych here in australia that is willing to try anything "outside the box".
Yeah I dunno.....
Any Sugestions?

Hey Freq,
Lithium is a great option... its always being used in unipolar depression now... its cheap, well-known regarding side effects and helps tons of people... look into it..

The medical insurance is pretty sweet though.

You live in Australia? Then I would consider trying a low dose Solian (amisulpride). Try 25-100 mgs.

What is your diagnosis? I am big on Nardil, but this is mainly for treatment resistant atypical depression and social anxiety. A two week trial of a MAOI will probably not do anything for you. Generally it takes four to six weeks at 1mg/kg of Nardil to get a response. Actually a two week trial of any AD other than the stimulants is probably only going to give you side effects. Some people claim a faster response to some ADs, but I have not experienced it. Lately, I have had some good luck with high dosages of Omega-3s (See the Alternative Board).
Good Luck,
Jedi

I had a great initial response to Ritalin, although didn't stick with it for a few reasons -- made me feel high, and gave me headaches. It might be worth talking to your pdoc about trying some sort of stimulant with an AD. Provigil gave me the same sort of response, a couple of years ago, boosting my mood, augmenting the AD.
Other than that, I guess I'd ask what symptoms you're trying to address, and what specific results you've had with the various drugs. For instance, Ritalin didn't work out for me, but it did address the most troublesome adverse effect of the ADs for me: that amotivation/lethargy/etc that can happen. (I take Wellbutrin, fer cryin' out loud -- it ain't supposed to be quite so sedating...) Provigil helped a little bit, but after a couple of years on it, I started getting more depressed.
Right now, I'm trying Adderall, which isn't doing as much as Ritalin -- and it puts me to sleep about an hour after I take it. Some days I can't help but think my brain was put together sideways... :-D But, one way or another, it is helping a bit with the really awful sluggishness. (Except during that nap attack time.)
It sounds to me as though you're experiencing placebo effect, if you get relief in the first two weeks on a drug. Pretty much all of them require more time than that. But if you can remember what you've taken, what it's done, and which symptoms are most bothersome to you, that should help suggest possiblities.
Good luck.

Hey,
I think beginning at 600mg and moving upwards toward 1200mg is generally a good approach... lithium is neat in that it would take effect much quicker than antidepressants... you'll know in a week or two not 6=8 weeks if its workin for u...

No No.. It takes 4 or 5 weeks for the meds to start working but then it only lasts 2 weeks or so. My main problem is amotivation/lethargy/etc also Social Phobia. Low dose Solian Ive tried with no luck. Ive been down the stimulants road and aint going back. (Nasty tollerance and comedown)
Think Ill try and give Lithium a try. Thanks again.

Nice to see another aussie in here, I'm a Melbourne boy and have had a similar reaction to most AD's. I just take valium to keep me even and it seems to work ok for me, another mood stablizer to keep in mind is Epilim (sodium valproate) but it put me into a zonbie like state. Don't forget if you go onto a mood stablizer you have to have regular blood tests, all the best, Paul
