I've been reading some previous threads and it seems there is some debate as to whether the "new" Nardil is as effective as the previous. While this doesn't necessarily make sense to me pharmacologically in that the same active ingredient and dose is present, I would never argue with an individual's own personal experience with the two "versions." Still, I'm in a dilemma as to whether I should go ahead and try Nardil for my social anxiety (which along with Klonopin seems to by far be the best treatment) or go with Parnate, which also appears to be quite effective.
Based on personal or anecdotal experience from others, is Nardil an overall superior med for social anxiety than Parnate? If the difference is negligible, would it be worth just going with Parnate for now in light of the "controversy" surrounding the Nardil versions? And last but not least, is there much of a difference in terms of side effect profile?
Thanks for your input. I'm meeting with my Psychiatrist tomorrow, and will likely bring up the possibility in our discussion. It would be great to have a daily med like an MAOI to go along with my prn Klonopin/Provigil, hoping that weight gain and/or sexual side effects wouldn't be too much of a burden. After all, SSRIs have been a bust and I'm running out of options.

I'm not sure there is an answer to your question. People do well on Nardil, people do well on Parnate. I have personally been on Nardil and only experienced a partial response. I do not have social anxiety however, just TRD, dysthymia, anhedonia, cognitive trouble. It might be true that Nardil has more side effects. i experienced insominia and horrible anorgasma. I don't think anorgasma is as common with Parnate. It's been said Nardil is good for anxiety and parnate is good for restoring energy, take from that what you will. I have been in your position before..."what drug shall I take?" Even my doctor asked me whether I wanted parnate or nardil. Doctors only use their gut and intuition unfortunately. Maybe I chose wrong in choosing Nardil. whatever. You don't know until you try. It just shows how little we know about this damn disease. Maybe from what I have said and info you've gathered you can make a decision, and that will be the best decision you can make. Good luck.

> RocketHey Rocket,
I'll just give you MY personal experience with Nardil..remember this is just me, I know a lot of people who do great on Nardil. For me, Nardil did relieve my depression, however the side-effects were horrible. Insomnia, Night Jerks, Terrible anorgasmia the whole time I was on it 3 1/2 mos. I couldn't ejaculate. It was just a very *strange* drug for me, But if you try it you may do much better than I did.
Parnate on the other hand, Well, you know I love my Parnate baby! :) I wish you Good luck with the one you choose.Tyler

To start with I have a complicated mood disorder Bipolar2/ Atypical Dysphoric Depression (with aspects of social anxiety, suicidal depression, seasonal affective disorder, OCD, EDS (simple narcolepsy), blah blah blah...)
I can't really say anything about the sexual side effects of these MAOI's because (as my therapist believes) obliterating my sex drive tends to make me more stable (even if that is a perverse way to get through life.)
To the point: Nardil was intolerable. It made me feel comatose. Parnate was okay. It was no better or worse than other antidepressants. Back in the day, I use to bet the house on each new drug or drug cocktail that came out. I'm more realistic now. I stopped Parnate just to try something else back then... If your are prone to big time insomnia, I might try Nardil. Otherwise, I'd say go with Parnate.
Good Luck. River.

Tyler,
I apologize if you've covered this in another post, but what was your initial dose escalation regimen and what is your current dose? My epocrates suggests it be started at 10mg three times per day and increased 10mg/day every one to three weeks as necessary to a max of 60mg/day (or 20mg three times per day). Has this been your experience as well?
Thanks!

That sounds about right, and standard. Some people if they are lucky will have a strong stimulant reaction to parnate upon first using it,this is unlikly to stay as is,so personaly for those lucky enough to have it,i would actualy say before u take ur second dose examine how u feel on the 10 mg,ride that as long as u can.
If you dont have relief on 10 mg a day, then 30 mg a day in three doses sounds correct, and in a little less than 2 weeks you should know if u need to go up higher than the 30 mg.

> I increased my dose pretty rapidly..Low doses of meds never work for me and my pdoc knows this so he let me increase dose aggressively.Day 1 and 2: 30 mgs. all in morning
Day 3 thru 5: 40 mgs. all in morning
Day 6 thru 8: 50 mgs. all in morning
Day 9 thru 15: 60 mgs. all in morning, this is when I felt it start to work...it was and still is wonderful! You know how you take ssri's, snri's, TCA's and don't really feel anything. MAOI's are different you actually feel them working and it is an awesome feeling.
I'm currently at 80 mgs. all in morning and doing great. Want to stay at this dose if possible. Taking all in the morning works great for me, I feel good all day long, and taking them early (7:00 a.m.) allows them to wear off some before bed to help prevent insomnia.
For ME, Parnate is more effective against Social Phobia than Nardil. I currently have no social phobia at all. Some people will tell you just the opposite that Nardil is better. But, what I want to emphasize is that Parnate works better for ME not EVERYBODY! Take care Bud..hope this helped a little.

I've got two minuets to write this before I have to go back to work, so here goes!
I should first say that I haven't tried Nardil or Parnate
I speculate however that they may be effective for different types of Social Phobia 0r Social Anxiety?
I.e very Anxious SA people might respond better to Nardil, were as withdrawn depressed, low self esteem SA sufferes might respond better to Parnate?
Just a thought.........

I should just mention that Marplan 60-70mg didn't work for my Social Anxiety or Depression.
Although it does help with anxiety.
Having said that it works great for some people
This is the end of the thread.
