I've read in a few posts this can help you sleep. i don't know much about meds perscription or not. what form does it come in, can you get it over the counter at the drugstore? what is in it that helps you sleep? is it just an ingredient in something (like cold medicine or over the counter sleeping pills), or do you just ask for trazadone?
thanks for any info anyone can give me.

Hey, trazodone (desyrel) is an old antidepressant that is primarily used now for its sedative properties. Dosage for sleep is typically 50 to 150mg but some people take alot more. Its not an over the counter med so you would need to see a dr first.

> thanks for any info anyone can give me.Its a very old 1970s era antidepressant that an adult daytime dose would put anyone to sleep. It's used off label (prescription, here in the US, I dont know where you are) for a sleep agent. It makes you kind of loopy and dizzy and I find it horrid for sleep.
But some doctors don't like prescribing better things like Ambien/Ambien CR and Lunesta, which promote REM much more and are perfectly safe long term. It also carries a nonzero risk of priapism (sustained erection) for males (yes, I experienced it, its not "rare"). Its usually rx'd at 50mg, but some doses can eventually escalate into the antidepressant range from tolerance.
That's Desyrel in a nutshell.

I've been taking trazadone for about 5 years for sleep. It works like a charm for me. However, my therapist says that trazadone sleep is not real sleep. All I know is that I wake up rested and I don't have to have any of those nasty addictive benzos in the house.

One thing I found with trazadone is that it caused the freakiest dreams/nightmares I have ever had. They were just so damn REAL. Now that I am back on an MAOI I can take it because MAOI's tend to about kill REM sleep so it puts a roadblock up against the intensity of the dreams.

Oh yes, I feel fine. I have been on one MAOI or another for over 25 years and I do feel rested. Never had a problem.

JaclinHyde, I just started Parnate 2 days ago, I also took it 9 years ago and i loved it until it "poop out" after only 2.5 mos. You have had 25 yrs experience with MAOI's so I bet you know a lot about augmentation agents, vitamin/minerals to use, what to do about afternoon fatigue, best ways to take your doses,i.e.,3 times a day or more. what i am asking is for you to please send me as much info, your experiences with maoi's, and anything to do or take to prevent poop out, I really want it to last this time because no AD ever made me feel as good as Parnate. I appreciate any info very much. Take care.
Sincerely, TylerJ
P.S. I'm also taking 150 mgs of Trazodone for sleep-so far so good,sleeping like a baby! :)

Hi Tyler
Folic acid has been used in combination with antidepressants to increase their efficacy. It might be something to consider, even though it hasn't been tested with Parnate. Folic acid is very safe (except in patients with vitamin B12 deficiency) and can be obtained without a prescription.

Trazodone never helped me sleep in the least, at any dose, but then no antidepressant ever has, most have the opposite effect, even Remeron. Tyler, I'd be a little worried about taking 150 mg trazodone with a MAO, it does have serotonin increasing effects, even though not a SSRI. Cecilia

Hi
Remeron might cause insomnia at 'antidepressant doses'. A low dose might help you sleep eg. 3.75-7.5mg.

Hey Ed, is Remeron safe to take with Parnate? And what are you taking, if you don't mind me asking? Hope you're doing well. Take care!

Hi Tyler
>......is Remeron safe to take with Parnate?
There's no research to answer that question I'm afraid :( I know Tom Twilight has taken Remeron with Marplan, a different MAOI. I don't think he suffered an interaction......but that doesn't mean other people wouldn't.
>And what are you taking, if you don't mind me asking? Hope you're doing well.
I'm ok thanks :) I take citalopram 80mg, amitriptyline 10mg, a multivitamin and a fish oil capsule.
Regards
Ed
