Generally what is the most effective SSRI?

Posted by rjlockhart on December 5, 2005, at 21:00:02

Prozac, luvox, zoloft?

Well i dont have alot into this post to put.

But what really is the most best tolerated or effective.

I know paxil definaly can tell a diffrence, but only blackboxed for suicide, in teenagers.

Does anyone have a put?

Seriously, Matt, that's the only answer there is to that question. All the SSRIs are different, and everyone reacts differently to each.

I would say Luvox===in my case. All the other SSRI's were worthless to me.

Unfortuntely every med affects every1 differently

Yeah, I agree with everyone here that only trial and error will identify which one is best for you.

They all do basically the same thing, but they are completely different molecules, and they all do significantly different things than just serotonin. One med might have high affinity for one person's receptors while it might have lower affinity for someone else's, probably having a lot to do with genetics at the molecular level. Just my guess.

Zoloft can touch dopamine, hardly at all in some people but bigtime in other people. Same with paxil except with norepinephrine. Luvox has some action on dopamine, most specifically when combined with seroquel.

They are all very different, not interchangeable, amd will have dramatically different results from one person to the next.
Just my opinions though.

hey. Yeah, the ADs all affect people differently. Generally speaking, the ADs are considered more or less equally effective, as long as the dosage is adequate; beyond that, its really a question of individual response. Luvox is better than the rest for OCD; zoloft and paxil tend to be rather soothing, while Prozac tends to be more energizing. The trick usually is balancing response with side effects, and then augmenting to maximize effectiveness. So, if a med works for you--but not too well--the answer may not be a switch, but rather an add-on med (atypical, BuSpar, Wellbutrin, stimulant, benzo, mood-stabilizer, etc.) The upside of this is that in the event the side effects from a treatment become unbearable, there are plenty of similar (yet...different) medications to choose from, plus the TCAs, the MAOIs, and the "atypical ADs".

Good luck.

A few independant studies show that people generally respond slightly better to zoloft than prozac.

I take Prozac 20mg daily, it does have a postive effect on me. Zoloft i was on years ago and i had a reaction to it, felt very wierd, suppressed.

Wellbutrin i was on a long time, but it increased anxiety, and not feeling real, but i may go back to it at a lower dose. I was on 450mg daily. Thats the highest. more like 150 XL.

Prozac is stimulating at low doses, 20mg. 40mg is more serogeneric, makes you tired and apathic. Dont like that dose..... rofl.

Thanks

Matt

Hi Ace

There isn't any evidence that Luvox is superior to the other SSRIs for OCD. In general, Luvox's antidepressant and anti-obsessional properties are similar to those of other SSRIs.
