probs w/ generic anti-depressants?

Posted by Paul Tullis on November 21, 2005, at 14:03:38

Hi--
I'm a journalist for a science magazine working on an article about some recent studies suggesting that there may be significant differences between brand anti-depressants such as Prozac and their generic equivalents. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has been switched to a generic version of Prozac, Paxil, Wellbutrin or Zoloft and experienced either a relapse of symptoms or the appearance of side effects or both. You do not have to give your name. Many thanks, Paul

I was on brand prozac for a year. Then when generic came out, I was switched to that. I could tell a subtle but noticeable difference, and I told my doctor about it and asked some chemistry buffs about it, and they all said it was my imagination or that it had something to do with the different fillers. Yeah right.

It took a few months, but the characteristics that prozac had on me changed gradually after switching to generic. I developed side effects of "morning dread" that had never existed before. Of course, most would argue that had nothing to do with the generic switch. But I know my body, and I think it did.

I used to take brand remeron for sleep because it was so sedating. Recently I tried it again, except generic, and found it much milder in terms of sedation than I remembered.

If you gave me a blind test...brand prozac for one week...a one week placebo wash out...and one week of generic, without me knowing which week had the brand or the generic, I guarantee you I could tell the difference.

I was switched to generic Wellbutrin sr and I found it to be better than the brand name.
